So, the other day, I went down to the local gun store with the idea that I'd pick up this Walther P-1 I'd seen there.

I got there, looked at the Walther, and just couldn't find much love for it, especially at the price they were asking (much more than the going rate.)

HOWEVER, they had some used M64-3s, and one of them came home with me.

No regrets with the way things turned out; you can never have too many Smiths, and I'd been wanting a HB .38 with fixed sights for a while now.

At least you k now you wont be cracking the frame on the smith!
I have been looking at a pencil barrel one of those for months now, Still sitting ..... NICE GUN you made the correct choice.

Great gun, I started my LE career with that very platform. Even though the flavor of the day back then was the transition to the hi-cap 9mm, I never felt under-gunned with my HB 64.

Sarge, good choice. I do have a P-1 that I bought more the curiosity of it.

I recently (about a month ago) bought a 64-5 that looks a spitting image of yours except the grips were pretty ratty. No matter. Kim Ahrends fixed me right up.

I saw several references to the term "HB 38". What does "HB" stand for?

Very nice, very nice indeed.
I set out to buy one of those a year or so ago and ended up buying 2 M65's
the nice thing about the M65 is i can shoot .357 or .38, which I shoot the most anyway.
I also use mine for a carry gun.
I like the looks of wood grips but use hogue rubber grips when I use it as a carry gun.

BTW, the box mine came in looks exactly like yours, right down to the hole in the side.

I wonder who is unloading this batch of 64s nationawide?

Mine came with a perfect plastic box - even the shot cartridge and some little keys that fit it's hole - which is in the side of the revolver! Yep, I bought an unissued security guard company 4" 64-8 last spring for the same price as the well used versions - $309 - a deal. I love it, even if it came respendent with it's IL, MIM parts, and two-piece barrel. 'Club 1852' info, too! I was tickled to get it last spring... still love it. The rubber Hogues had to go - as did the OEM trigger return and hammer springs. Great plinker - and home defender!

Check pawn shops and area dealers - these 'deals' are still around.

I bought a 64-5 DAO from J&G Sales last month when they still had the square butt versions for $230. The finish shows carry wear, but the mechanicals are great and it was extremely clean. I like DAO revolvers anyway, so I thought it was a great deal. I'm tempted to order one of their later round butt versions, but I want one without the magnum frame and with the firing pin on the hammer. Some of them are set up that way (64-6 perhaps), but others are not. Perhaps I can call and request one the way I want it. I really don't need another, but when is it about need?

Oh, yeah. I got one just like that off of Thiokol a while back, and it's about my favorite. You can shoot that heavy barrel all day without a snag or glitch.

Yes, you did the right thing! The last gun I bought was a Mod 64 two inch, my second one. I like'em too!
