A -4 wouldn't be 1985. The 586 "no dash" ran from 1981 to 1986. The -4 was introduced in 1993. I think most, if not all, were originally square butt, changing to round butt in 1995-96 when S&W went to the RB grip frame for all the revolver models. The -4 was replaced by the -6 in 1997 (the -5 was a special run for Brazil, and was chambered in .38 Special).

I have one that I think is marked 586-3. I'm not at the house right now so I can't check. Seems if was a distributor special from 1993. 4 inch barrel, black non reflective finish. Hogue monogrip.

You are correct about the dates. It was likely around 94-95 from other info I checked. I looked up the first date on a page I had made some notes on. I wasn't thinking about the two 586 6 inch I have. One is a no dash.

Were those 38 special?

Yes, .38 Special and the barrel is actually 4.2". This was the second Brazil Contract - not mentioned in the SCSW. Somewhat of an anomaly in that they were/are -4's but were shipped in 1997, while the other contract was made up of -5's but shipped in 1993.

Adios,

3" and under were always round butt.......

The only "old style" 586s with longer barrels and round butts would be the -4s from 95/96-97 when the -6 was introduced....

( In 1997 the -6 (new style) changed frame design, added the MIM trigger and hammer w/ floating firing pin and changes to internal lockwork.. )

or special Distributor run.......

I've got a -4 from 96....... round butt..... great gun butt way too nice to shoot...... LOL.... so I shoot my 4" 686 -nuttin that I round butted in the 80s

Interesting - I never knew that. I've got a 6" no-dash with a round butt, but it's one that someone converted after it left the factory. The SN on the butt is well off-center (almost defaced, but thankfully not), otherwise it's such a good job that it looks original.

To add to what Pizza Bob and others have said.......

The 4-inch -4 Brazilian Contract gun had a product code of 103498. The 6-inch version 103499. The ones I saw all had ship dates in September of 1997. Hogue grips and the serial number prefixes I observed were all CCE. If there was another barrel length, I never saw or recorded it.

The -5 guns had the same pc, and there was both a 4 & 6-inch off those too. Shipped in October of 1993, and then again in September of 1994. All of these I've seen had BPY s/n's, even though the ship dates in some cases differ by a year.

There was also 2 1/2-inch -5 with pc 103497. The one I saw had a BRF s/n, Hogue grips, and shipped in March of 1994.

None of the s/n prefixes I saw were exclusive to the BC. Meaning, other everyday standard production guns shared those same prefixes.

Rechecked serial on mine. It's BSP putting it between 94-95.

That's interesting. To bad you don't have the box. If you did we could see the Spec. Ord. number, which is typically a date code. BTW, I'd put BSP in February - March 1995, but special order and export guns often don't always follow the normal date sequences.

I've personally seen 3 different 586-5 357s round butts. All had 4" barrels and came with hogue square butt grips. Sku was 103534.

Good info. That was the product code for the standard production 4-inch M586. I think they used the same code on the -1 thru the -5. The no-dash guns had different p.c.'s., and the Brazilian contact guns all had their own unique codes.
