I have a really nice 629-4 I recently bought. I've been reading about the 629 shaking apart because of ammo that was too powerful to run through it. So what's the story guys. What is safe and what will ruin my ,new to me, 629?

Your 629-4 is one of the better .44 Mags built by S&W.
It should handle factory 240-gr Magnum loads without any issues.
I have settled on a couple of factory loads for my .44 Mag S&W's.
Winchester Silvertip 210-gr, if I happen to be carrying one of my .44 Mags as a defensive weapon.
The other is Winchester White Box 240-gr JSP. I have stocked up on several boxes of this, as it's reasonably priced, accurate, reliable, and an excellent general-purpose round.

Most factory loads should be just fine and should not promote accelerated wear.
As Jack the Toad has written, your gun has the "E" endurance modification to the internal lockwork.
Stick with 240 grain factory loads and it will be fine.
Your wrists will wear out from firing before the gun will!

I would love to use 240-260 gr cast bullets in my 629-6 but I bought this gun to use in case of a bear encounter and want a 300 gr cast bullet. I am using the factory Federal 300 gr corecast ammo which is SAAMI compliant and Federal said it should be fine in my gun. Accuracy is good and recoil isn't bad with the Federal factory ammo either. I will be ordering some Garrett 310 gr cast Defender ammo though before Spring and shed antler hunting season rolls around. Randy Garrett really knows what he is talking about with the 44mag ammo and bears.

Yes I know all the bad about stopping bears with any revolver
