First was probably a 1950 chevy 3/4 ton pickup. My Dad told me that when I could use the shift lever, clutch, gas and see out the window at the same time, I could give it a try.
From about 11 on I drove the chevy truck and our 1929 Ford coupe on an an old slag heap we had in town. Fifty cents worth of gas and I was set for Sunday afternoon at the slag heap.
'69 Galixie 500,What a tank.Believe it or not that same engine is still running today in my dads '66 F100.It's a 390 with toploader 4speed.Yep my dad has stolen three 4speeds from me over the years.
Oh well,
D.G.
Dad taught me to drive when I was about 12, I believe the first vehicle I ever drove was Mom's metallic pea green '75 Ford station wagon. About the same time my grandparents "gave" me an old company pick-up to run around out property, it was a '75 Ford F-100, straight six, three-on-the-tree.
1932 Ford stake truck in the hay fields. I drove between wind rows while the big guys threw the hay up onto the truck. We did not have a bailer.

Okay, here goes..... I'm only 26, learned how drive on 9.18.01, and my first car I learned how to drive was a 1992 Honda Accord EX 5 spd. I loved that car, and so did the chicks I also totaled it a year later by paying more attention to the redhead in the front seat next to me than the stopped tahoe with a trailer hitch in front of me.... oh well...
Willy's Jeep CJ3B! High Top hood. I like the 2A's better, but it was a blast for an 8 year old boy in the woods. Had to start it a couple times after stalling it, but got her going.
When I was 13 years old I learned to drive in my Dads 1973 Vega Panel delivery... with a L79 350 hp 327... with milled and ported heads, Duntov 30-30 cam, Edelbrock C4B intake...
On a dirt road.
The man had more nerve than I ever will LOL.
'53 Nash Ambassador for me. That thing had the turning radius of a tanker truck. Other niceties were dimmer switch on the floor, wind wings, and a bomb-nose steering wheel center that would crush any driver's chest in the unlucky event of a head-on collision.
Also fully reclinable front seats, making a fairly large interior flat area whose potential I never quite had the opportunity during high school to utilize fully.
What a bizarre assembly of features. Wish I had it now.
The other car I got to drive after I got my license was a '60 Rambler Station Wagon. Push-button transmission!
For a few months there was also a Nash Metropolitan, the rolling Womb with a View. Others I remember from the vehicular stable were a '46 Nash coupe and a '51 Nash Statesman -- the world famous "bathtub Nash." The bathtub had a starter switch in the floor under the clutch pedal so you couldn't start it in gear accidentally. You mashed the clutch pedal down to get the car going.
My first was a 1953 VW Bug i was 9 drove it on an acrage but my dad used to let me steer i was probly only 6 or 7 if that . Bought my first car when i was 13 it was a 63 Pontiac 2 dr i wish i still had it. It went like a raped ape... Good ol'e days....
