What Car Did You First Learn to Drive

1957 Willys wagon. It had three sticks on the floor, one was the 3-speed shifter, one to go in and out of 4WD and the third was for high and low range in 4WD. I tipped the thing over on its side in a ditch one time and didn't even scratch it. I think it was made of cast iron.

First was an early '50s Chevy pickup. Grandpa didn't like the way I threw the hay out the back to the cows, so he showed me how to put it in first (three on the tree), let out the clutch and steer. I would drive around the pasture while he threw out the hay, then he would jump out, jog to the door and I would slide over and he would take the wheel.

Dad taught me to shift to second, third, fourth and fifth gears a couple of years later in a Honda Accord. He had ten between '78 and '82. I would guess it was one of the '79s.

1969 Pontiac Ventura. It was 18 years old and I was 17.

What a lot of good miles and memories.

1937 Ford V8/60 coupe. Learned to drive it on a big ballfield when I was 13 and my father gave it to me when I turned 16-that was 1949.:)

I learned to drive on a tractor when I was 12. I drove a 2 ton truck on the road before i ever drove a car.

Same here, a John Deere 420 when I was 7, just working the clutch on level ground. Varioius p/u's and an IH scout on the road pre-teen. Driving was fun then.
