What do I have? 32 Long Ctg

Nice piece to inherit.

It looks like pretty good condition for that age.
The .32 long is generally known as the 32 S&W long; and is a superb round for plinking and small game. The parent caliber was just a 32 S&W which was shorter and even less powerful. The S&W long has very little recoil which makes it a fantastic caliber for seniors and ladies and anyone who is recoil adverse; Me.

Also, the .32 S&W long has seen a big resurgence over the last few years, with the advent of the powerful .32 H&Rmagnum and the really powerful .32 327federalmagnum.

With the memories that sixshooter holds, it is a nice family heirloom.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! S&W started making the .32 Hand Ejector chambered for .32 S&W Long in 1896. It was the first S&W handgun with a swing out cylinder and solid frame. As Chad says, yours was made in the mid-1920's and is a 3rd Model. Prescut mentions they are fun to shoot and I strongly agree. S&W made a couple different versions of the .32 HE. Yours is the basic model but they also made the Regulation Police starting in 1917. It differed from the basic model by having a stepped (rebated) backstrap that mated to an extended square butt stock that was easier to grip for people with larger hands. The .32 HE came with black hard rubber round butt grips like on your gun. The .32 RP came with walnut extended length square butt grips. Examples are pictured below:

The Regulation Police is the top gun and hand ejector made around the time yours was is on bottom.

Small Frame .32s

My wife recently recently inherited and I'm trying to gather more information.

32 Long Ctg
length - 3in
serial number 410855

top of barrel includes three patent dates
FEB.6.06 SEPT.14.09 DEC.29.14

Thank you

Very nice H.E. I have 2 pre war .32RPs and a 1955 made .32 HE 2" RB. I started reloading .32 S&W Long a few years ago. Very easy and fun to work with once you are set up for it. I agree with the .32 fans. These can be addictive.

Probably an adequate sidearm for police back in the day. Right up until the criminals started using shotguns and semi-auto weapons. I have a model 31-1 that I load for and shoot. It's a hoot.

Welcome to the circus. It's a good group of knowledgeable folks here.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on a beautiful family heirloom!

Worth in the $350 to $450 price range in that condition depending on the location. But of course it's priceless to your family.

Hope you intend on enjoying it by shooting it. They're very accurate.

Thank you all for the replies.
It will stay in the family and is a perfect for my wife. It will eventually go to my son who has a small collection of vintage guns. He is stationed in Wyoming and he loves it there.
I'm in California and will be taking it out very soon.
