What do you do when you get a friend that needs a "reality check"

Sorry to read of your friends situation, no good way to help. He needs a marriage counselor. Sadly, after he sells the guns something else will come up. I would drag him to Walmart or the LGS and get him to purchase a pistol safe. Keeps the little ones from fooling with it, plus it will keep the wife happy.

Instead of doing a search of guns for sale, do a search of completed auctions to see what the guns are actually selling for. You have to have an account to do a completed auctions search on Gunbroker, but the account is easy to set up.

I didn't even know u can do that, as I just joined. Perhaps I did see that, but figured it was spilt milk. But I'd still like to know, how?

if he is not willing to pistol whip her. this is the ONLY option that is okay.

if he does let his wife make him sell a gun for that reason, tell him to hand over his man card and you will punch it 3 times for that nonsense. maybe even 4, and remind him 5 is grounds for revocation.

A real friend would tell him the guns are worth more than a couple of grand and that he shouldn't take a penny less. When they don't sell, blame the economy, and buy a small safe. Maybe after the wife figures out that the guns won't hop up on their own and start shooting people, he can keep them.
