What do you do with a model 10?

It is the middle of February, the ground is covered in snow and ice, the temperatures are, highs in the teens and lows around zero, and I am bored stiff. So, I went to a small gun show last weekend, just to do something until this awful weather goes away, and came home with a 10-5. Made an offer of $300 and it was accepted. I think I did pretty good at that,but mostly I just wanted to buy something because I was bored. Now don't get me wrong, I think I would have kicked myself if I had left the show with out it, but I am now thinking what to do with it. I will of coarse take it to the range, maybe take it for walks in the woods, and may even put it in my carry rotation on special occasions. It wil also keep my 2 inch 10-5 company.

So what do you do with your Model 10?

Well, I gave this one away to my son's F-I-L.

The RB gun was my woods gun until I got myself a S&W 25-5 .45 Colt. Though it is heavier, it offered a greater level of comfort...power wise.

"What do I do with my 10-5?" Just keep it. If it's got a 4" barrel put it to work, as in carry it. It's an accurate, well-built revolver and I'm not sure they make 'em like that anymore. When I was an LEO in CA (a long, long time ago) a Model 10 was my duty weapon. It had a 6" barrel and I made the department's pistol team with it.

If I ever run across one I'll snap it up.

MODEL 10

Coincidentally I bought a 10-6 today heavy bbl, trigger job, ramp front sight milled a bit thinner, more holster wear, and Hogue finger grips, which I need anyway, 350$. I plan on steel challenge and giving it a go with heavier cast boolits on bowling pins in it's future. Sorry too ignorant for pics. Say where did the date by serial # sticky go to? I have # D8717**. Congrats. Any indoor ranges near you? I shot steel challenge today and froze my tucas off, should have worn the wool socks with my sneakers/ shorts/ hoodie. :)

What do I do with my Model 10? More like what do I NOT do with my Model 10 (-7) :) She slings lead down range and lets me hit the center of a clay pigeon at 30 feet... CONSISTENTLY... I'll post a picture if I get around to the safe in this weather... I've only cleaned my guns about 15 times so far.
 
Well, you could dump a ton of money into it and create a very special carry gun. This started as a 3" square butt 10-5 Puerto Rican trade in. Got a set of Nill's that cost close to what the gun was worth and then a trip to Robar for NP3 and some customizing and you get a heirloom that is one of the most well balanced great carry revolvers that I have ever owned.

Pretty much just about everything I need a good totally reliable handgun for !!!!! I have other's of course, but my model 10-5-3" is overall probably my favorite revolver, at least for every day use. They are kind of like an anvil, it's pretty difficult to damage them (yes, you can if you really try, but you have to work at it), and it will last and work well pretty much forever with even a minimum of care. With .38 +P Special ammo, you are very well armed for any personal protection needs, and with wadcutters or standard pressure ammo, you can shoot more rounds than you can probably afford to buy or build in your lifetime and it will still be good to go. That's a nice example you have there ... definitely a keeper. Everybody ought to have at least one!!!

Pretty good question, actually. What niche does a model 10 fill when there are so many more powerful revolvers out there and so many more concealable revolvers out there? If you don't work for a security company, it may be hard to justify a 10 in practical terms. It's got a lot of history and is very well made and very affordable...but that doesn't necessarily mean it's the right tool for the job.

I think mine fill a definite niche in my collection...mostly because they AREN'T 4 inch guns. My pre-model is a 2 inch and my 10-3 is a 3 inch. That makes them way more concealable than my 64 or 15's, yet they can hold one round more than my J frames or Rossi 68/88 series guns. They can also handle the real heavy .38 loads (Buffalo Bore) and soak up recoil better. A good afternoon woods gun if I don't want to lug around an L frame.
