I just completed a deal today with another collector, I picked up a 547 RB, 3inch, s/n ABN6XXX, probably mid 1983, NIB. It even feels good in my big hand. It wasn't high on my want list but I always thought they were interesting and the time was right. There are no marks no turn ring no signs of having been fired. Box and all the paper and the cleaning rod, still in the bag unopened.:D

They have a really uniquely designed extractor that works well and doesn't require moon clips. I owned one and love it. I still don't understand why SW got out of the 9mm revolvers. 940 & 547. Except they were just a little ahead of their time when semi autos were taking the public by storm and SW was probably thinking revolvers were going out as a whole. (WRONG)
They are bringing one back in 2014. I expect it will sell well.
The extractor that is so cool is also the 547s achilles heel.
Congrats and a really nice 3".

"What do I think of the 547?"

I think I'd like to have one.

I'll probably get one of the new S&W 9mm revolvers recently announced.

Maybe one of each model.

You have obtained an excellent investment quality S&W. I don't care much for safe queens, but that 547 is a safe queen based on its high desirability and collector value.

There were about 10,270 units 6486 in round butt. I have owned 2 round butt 1 square butt and sold all of them. There has always been some one that wanted it more than me.

I think they are cool revolvers. I have enjoyed mine for many years.

As chuck8388 points out, they are not as rare as the Internet makes us believe. I think it is just that most owners do not part with theirs.

I have the 3" 940.It is a sweet little 9mm. I carry it in my rotation. The 940 unlike the 547 has quite a little kick to it. The 547 is better suited in the K frame. IMO.

The Model 547 is the original 9mm M&P !

Such a cool revolver and way ahead of its time,
This is the one S&W should be making now in SS and a model with target sites,

Interesting and neat guns IMHO. At different times, I had two of the 3" models. The extractor and the extra pin than apparently kept the tapered 9MM cases from setting back on firing worked exatly as designed on my guns. No pierced primers, and the cases extracted without difficulty, even with some very energetic ammunition. The mainspring is pretty heavy in these guns compared with .38, .357, etc K frames. I did find that the beryiliam copper extractor wore with minimal use, causing carry up/timing to get a little lazy. Steel hand working against copper extractor star, steel wins. Otherwise, neat little guns that sometimes bring prices now days that truly amaze me....ymmv

What is the point of asking the question?
Just above your post the site CLEARLY STATES that "bashing" of modern guns will not be tolerated so regardless of what I or anyone else may genuinely think about the 547, we cannot POST anything other than POSITIVE.

With that said, the 547 is a wonderful revolver!

I had a pair of them purchased new back when I had an FFL. One was for my dad and the other was mine. I put a lot of rounds thru it and its a nice revolver. It really reminds me of the model 10 in feel and accuracy.
I fired lots of different 9mm ammo types and never had misfire but infrequent ejection failures of cases depending on the ammo / brass case. It was an interesting gun and glad I had the chance to use one for several years. I sold mine and my dad also let his go long ago for different shooting irons.

The sticky note refers primarily to bashing S&Ws with the IL, something that happens quite frequently.

The 547 is not a "modern" gun as compared to those from the age of MIM parts and the IL.

Posting "negative" commentary is perfectly permissible if done in a neighborly fashion, and not done in the interests of promoting a personal agenda, feeding into urban legend, or being disagreeable for the sake of being disagreeable. Ironically, you own comment comes close to what the sticky prohibits as you are criticizing the OP for no legitimate reason, while ending with a positive sentiment about his 547.

Downside of the 547:

1) For an everyday CCW, it is a 9mm which many believe to be an inferior chambering.

2) The inflated prices that 547s are currently enjoying may make it ill-suited for normal wear and the potential for losing perceived "value".

3) Possibility of extraction issues using 9mm.

For a carry gun it would be excellent and would prefer the 9mm chambering over a 3" Model 10 in .38 Special. In stainless it would have even been better.

If one wants a 9mm or for that matter a .38 Super revolver an easier and cheaper way to go is sending the cylinder of your favorite carry .38/.357 to TK Custom and have it rechambered and cut for moon clips.

I found an extra cylinder for a 66 and sent it in to have done so I didn't have to modify the original of the 3" I have. Also had a 649 Bodyguard done and it shoots .38s, Supers and 9mm all from the same gun...

I found one a couple of years ago in 3 inch. The extractor would not consistently work. While a very interesting gun I traded it for a 686-4 2 1/2 inch which has been totally reliable. I was in it for $400. Love my 686. 547 not my cup of tea. But yours may be just what you are looking for. Good luck.

very beautiful and portable compact revolver congratulations
