What does S&W do to the Mass Complaint Shield to make the Trigger 10.5 pounds?

I just purchased 10.5 lb 9MM Shield. 4/15/17 MA compliant. Hate the trigger. Was thinking of putting in an Apex kit. Had a feeling it would be practically impossible to get these compliant guns to 5 lbs. I'm not putting one cent more into this ***. I will carry something else.

I have a MA compliant Shield with the 10lb trigger. I installed an Apex kit. That brought the pull weight down to 6lbs. I installed a free-state S&W trigger spring in place of the Apex trigger spring, and that brought it down to right at 5lbs. I actually put the Apex spring back in for a 6lb pull, as personally, I felt it better for a CC gun. Everything "MA" goes away with the Apex Duty/Carry Kit. Highly recommended.

Can an individual purchase a Shield sear or is it a gunsmith only item?

Mals

After market sears are available. S&W will only sell sears to LE armorers who've graduated from S&W training. You can buy a complete sear block.

Our lead armorer said they had to take the sear block apart in training. Getting the sear back in was so much fun, he said it was much easier/cheaper to replace the whole block.

I did the same with my shield and 40 FS and could not be happier with the 6 lbs pull. 5 seemed a little light for carry.

And hand gun sold (NEW) in MA has to be MA compliant even if the dealer is doing a transfer from an out of state dealer. Once you own it you can do what you want to it. There are firearms the state looks at differently, AR & AKs

(2) It shall be an unfair or deceptive practice for a handgun-purveyor to transfer or offer to
transfer to any customer located within the Commonwealth any handgun which does not contain a mechanism which effectively precludes an average five year old child from operating the
handgun when it is ready to fire; such mechanisms shall include, but are not limited to: raising
trigger resistance to at least a ten pound pull, altering the firing mechanism so that an average
five year old child's hands are too small to operate the handgun, or requiring a series of multiple
motions in order to fire the handgun.

The 10 pound trigger pull requirement is not an absolute if one of the other situations exist. Short of those, the firearm MUST have a 10 lb trigger pull or greater.

You could make the gun barrel 20 inches long and perhaps if a child could not hold the weight it would qualify, however, the easiest way to comply with the law is the 10 lb trigger pull.
