What Does "Tactical" Mean To You?

Tactical black

They use that word because people think it's cool.
I saw a pair of "Tactical" handcuff keys recently. Also saw in a magazine a "Tactical" clipboard.

I guess if you paint it black it makes it "Tactical".

No cammo is also highly "tact-ti cool". Maybe even better, becuse then all the mall ninja's can argue about which is the best cammo pattern.

Myself I'm not sure. I'm gonna go check all my back issues of "Soldier of fourtune" magazine.

Tactical means supporting the purpose of keeping your bu++ on this side of the grass. As in the "tactical reloads" we were taught to perform when we would fire 2 rounds, eject the empties and load 2 fresh rounds from the dump pouch, or load another round into the magazine of the 870 without looking. Those were tactics and using them was tactical.

The dump pouches and my M28 were black, so I guess we qualified as tactical even by today's standards.

Most of it explains itself. J frame, retractable leash, etc. I see poop bags. (They have a little cannister for those that clip to the lead, BTW)

But what is that clippy looking thingy right between the flashlight & smart phone?

Uh... those bags are high-strength black tactical recovery bags.

The clippy thingy is for the static line... low altitude tactical dog training.

I am not happy seeing regular Patrol Officers dressed like SWAT (at least in South Florida). Exterior vests, thigh holsters, etc. What's up with that? I was on the job for 25+ years and don't agree with that trend.

To me, it means a bunch of 'cool' stuff for the soldier-of-fortune wanna be. I'm interested in target shooting, not combat. I haven't seen any tactical gear for bullseye shooters yet.

I think of tactical as combination of gear for a particular purpose. And of course it must always be black.

The word Tactical is also used to check for any sign of life when an old curmudgeon is found face down in the dirt. If there is no sign of life after saying the word Tactical, try Tacticool... works better than a set of defib paddles.

As I was recovering from wounds from an IED at the time, it was all I could do not to ask if they were going to blow pig guts all over each other, too.

I have always thought in terms of tactical vs strategic; Active versus Preventive. But then, as a Cold War Child I heard way too much about the difference between tactical and strategic nukes as a young'un.

Strategic weapon: highest value is in the threat it poses to someone dumb enough to attack you.

Tactical weapon: one you actually use on someone dumb enough to attack you.

Looks more like a Strategic Dog to me - - and his strategery is working!

In my 34 year LEO experience, "Tactical" meant turning your brain on before you went out armed into dangerous places. Today, it seems to be nothing more than a term that is used to sell "cool" products to the unthinking, uninitiated and untrained.

Tactical as a marketing term in the gun community is just silly.

As Uncagrunny notes above, in the English language it is in contrast to strategic. Strategic is invading Normandy. Tactical is your dad's plan to take out a particular machine gun once he got there.

If it doesn't offend some folks, or otherwise cause discomfort and distress in the form of headache, nausea, heartburn and a rise in blood pressure, it probably isn't tactical.
