I have a friend with moutain property that we go out to camp and shoot on the occasional weekend. Once, intead of packing my M&P shield, I tried to be a bad *** and carry my 5" 629 .44. I have a nice leather holster and heavy horse leather gun belt. After an hour my waist and hip are hurting and I have to take it off.

I'm now looking at a chest or tanker rig. Any recommendations? DD guides choice? El Paso tanker?

I want to wear it around all day, and not have it in the way of shooting rifles, hiking, or just plain old camping.

Well, I carry my 629 5" Classic for days (weeks) at a time in a cut-down Bianchi 5BHL and an Uncle Mike's Instructor's belt (similiar to the Wilderness belts). I forget I'm wearing it.

TheBianchi is cut-down as it was for a 6" Model 29.

I have carried both 29's and 25's as well as 28's and 686's in the woods/fields. All of these revolves had 5-6 barrels, several had lugged barrels. My 625-2 is of course lugged as is the 686. I have been very pleased using a Bianchi 111 Cyclone worn in the cross-draw position. It is very comfortable for wearing while driving as well as when carrying a rifle or shotgun hunting. I have used a Bianchi shoulder holster w/ the N-frame 29, 625 and 28. It is very comfortable. The revolver is held securely and out of the way. During the winter my M-65 field jacket fits over it easily. With a tug of the zipper, I have immediate access to my revolver. Occasionally I've had some problems with sweat getting on the revolver when the weather was changing. The shoulder holster affords excellent protection in rain, etc., when wearing a coat. I must say that of late, I prefer the 111 for the shorter barrel guns. I have a wonderful Tom Threepersons holster from El Paso Saddlery that I also very much enjoy using for out and about in the woods/fields. It is about ideal unless one is carrying a long barrel and doing a lot of driving. I have a Lawrence field type holster that is old school... straight drop, snap, etc. I use it with my 625-2. It is unexcelled for field use. It is not so good if one is getting in and out of a car, etc. HTH. Sincerely. brucev.

Carried a 629 like yours in Alaska. An El Paso Saddlery Three Persons CrossDraw, worked well.

Eventually traded for a Mountain Gun, guess that was the reason they came up with the lighter design, as much friendlier to carry.

Shoulder holsters, of good quality work well.

If, you are carrying a rifle as well as the handgun, I would recommend one of the two mention.

Strong side carry just does not work well.

The Tanker is a great field holster, but to prevent it from flopping when doing much leaning forward you need to spin it around to your back. It's an easy one handed process but can be a bit pesky to some, El Paso makes the best variant of it I've handled.

A true chest holster will allow you to place it right where you need it. I remember seeing a post about this one somewhere here on the forums. Might be something your interested in:

Thanks everyone. I ordered an El Paso tanker. Up to 5" is only $112. Not bad for custom. I also ordered some $15 perry suspenders to try out with my leather belt and Kramer hip holster to see if that helps out. Suspenders....I'm getting old. Never in public though, woods only for now.

If, you are wearing your handgun on your pants belt, that was always a problem with me.

Handguns and equipment goes on separate belt. With me that is a must.

I didn't see your post until today. I carry my Blackhawk in a Chesty Puller rig from Simply Rugged. It's real secure, and very well designed.

Ditto. That is how I carry my 454 Casull Ruger Alaskan in the mountains.
