YES! I use the 158 grain +P LSWCHP in my S&W 642. BB claims over 1,000 FPS from a 1-7/8" J Frame barreled handgun.
IMHO: It doesn't get much better than that out of a small firearm for defense!

It's still in the Remington catalog but they changed some of their "Express" ammo to the newer HTP line. The old number was R38S12 and the new number is RTP38S12. It's the same ammo with a newer box. I guess they thought Terminal Performance would sell better than Express... lol

It's not exactly the same. The lead alloy got harder, so it doesn't expand as well as the old load.

You verified this by testing several examples of each with a hardness tester? So what is the Brinell hardness difference when averaged among the several of each bullet?

I emailed remington a few months back about the lhp htp 158gr +p. I got this response...

"Thank you for contacting Remington! We appreciate you taking the time to write in with your question. This ammo is not currently in production and I do not show that it is scheduled. Thank you!"

There seems to be a trend towards FMJ for target ammo. It may have to do with in door ranges, and the EPA. Plus major ammo manufacturers may be fearful of eventual lead poisoning litigation.

Buffalo Bore fills the gap, but at twice the price.

Like Hornady's stuff, you get what you pay for. Gas-checked lead, incredible consistancy.

I worked with the Rem. 158 LSWC HP +P and the same by Winchester about ten years ago; also the Buffalo Bore std. pressure and +P. The Buffalo Bore +P is in a league of its own, but standard pressure Buffalo Bore and the +P Rem. and +P Winchester all had similar velocities.

Pardon me if I didn't check the BHN on any of the bullets, but, as I recall, all the ammunitions leaded bores, at least slightly. Standard pressure Buffalo Bore was quite accurate with benchrested group sizes of under 2" at 25 yards. All three +P ammos averaged roughly 3" groups consistently. Evaluation was done using a pre-Model 23 Outdoorsman with 6 1/2" barrel.

Federal still has their 158gr lswchp. I was just on an ammo site earlier today and they had it in stock.

1000 fps with a 158 gr is impressive. I will be looking into that for carry.

.357's are just way too loud and stinging in a M60. The +P I have been using are under 1000 fps. Buffalo Bores should be even faster in a 3" barrel.

Yes they do (#38G) and so does Winchester last time I looked.

I have all three I'm a ammo can, some old but some of the Rem and Fed is new.

I know I THOUGHT I was buying it but it turned out to be standard pressure. I'm sure it will make nice clean holes in my target regardless.
