I am going to keep this Model 1950 as a shooter. I understand that it would be very difficult to find a pair of Farrant / Hurst stocks. Would any modern Square butt N frame grips work?

Yes N Frame square butt grips should work if modified slightly.

Back in the day I acquired a 1950 with the same modification to the grip for duty. The barrel had been cut back to three inches and the Ferrant grips were all out of proportion. I put on magnas and they worked but the front portion is unsupported and I now have an excellent pair of N Frame magnas that are ruined because of the chip out of the front. I'd get an inexpensive pair of N frames square butt grips and file/sand the bottom portion to match the grip and you should be in business.

Hope that helps.

Other than the chip on the stocks you have, there appears to be nothing much wrong with them, and they will work just fine. If the chip bothers you, they can be repaired and they are probably worth the expense of having it done, IMHO.

Folks here probably think I'm off my rocker but I'm getting prices from gunsmiths around the country to cut back the 6 1/2" to 5" and add a gold bead front sight..

The Farrant grips do come up for sale. I have gotten two sets here on the forums. Try a wanted to buy ad in the classifieds.

I guess I dont understand why your asking, it looks like you tried it in the pic? Any target grips will fit right over the grip frame and you will never know the cut is there? Even modern grips will fit fine, some might need some minor fitting but I use new targets on my pre war guns often.....

What Pontiaker said. If you use target grips, they cover the missing part of the frame and will still be sturdy enough to use. Magnas, however, will create a void as has already been described.

What are Farrant/Hurst grips? I have a Model 1955 with the grip frame cut in the same place but at a slightly different angle. Been trying to find out why.
