It depends on the use. Here are some of the guns I've looked at:

For carry:
Ed Brown Kobra Carry
Ed Brown Special Forces
Les Baer Thunder Ranch
H&K USP 9mm or .45 Compact

For range/target use:
Ruger Mark III Hunter
GSG 1911-22
Browning Hi Power
RIA 1911-A1 Tactical
Beretta 92FS

Those are just off the top of my head. The real list is much longer.

I would not buy a Glock and I would not buy a SIG Sauer P series.

I own a m&p 40 full size... im going to the twp tomorrow to apply for another gun permit... im looking at either a glock in 9 mm undecided of which version of glock or a Kimber SOLO.. in 9 mm.... both guns look very impressive to me... I like glocks.. but hell I may buy both in due time

Be careful when considering a Glock. They are great guns at reasonable prices, but the grip angle is different. If the Glock were your only gun, then it's not an issue. However, when switching back and forth between the M&P and the Glock, you will have aiming issues especially for defensive shooting.

I just did this a couple of weeks ago. I still carry my 37 S&W the most but I bought a Colt Government .45 with the 5" barrel. I bought a nice concealable holster and mag pouch and it seems to hide pretty well. I do hit better with it that some of my revolvers and it has run very smooth through the first box of shells. It is only the second brand new gun I have ever bought. At that price, it may be the last for some time.

I've owned more than a few 1911's and now I'm down to two: a new & unfired Magnum Research 1911C and an old worn out Auto Ordinance lying in my safe. Somewhere. Haven't seen it in a while.
What do I want next? Another full-size 1911. S.A., Colt or similar. If Money is no object, maybe a Les Baer or Wilson. .45 ACP of course.
