What happened to the .500 Special?

The vast majority of 500 S&W owners are handloaders. That pretty much negates the reason for the shorter Special to even exist.

I agree. 500 Mag recoil is not bad, but it most certainly is not a gun for someone new to shooting.

While not the old 500 special, magtech sells a light load 500 with similar performance. Magtech Sport Ammo 500 S&W Mag 325 Grain Light Loading Semi Jacketed

Or as others said, just reload with those 325 berry bullets, that is what I am getting ready to do.

I just ran a box of those 325gr Magtech's through my 500 about a month ago and I'm here to say that they are NOT reduced recoil rounds.. The stated muzzle velocity is 1378fps which is comparable to the Winchester reduced recoil 350gr round but they DO have a harder kick to them than the Winchesters!!

Also I noticed when I shot the first 5, a couple seemed to be hotter than the others. So I shot up the rest and there was indeed some that had a kick comparable to the 500gr Hornady rounds I've got!!

The ammo does not appear to be uniform in the powder loading so I won't be buying any more Magtech's!!!
