What happens after you shoot a home invader?

That reminded me of something I posted long ago.
This one took place 45 years ago, but I still get a kick out of it! I was liveing in north hollywood california. I had a old friend that came to my house that was badly beaten up and a sight! How he got beat up was a almost unbeliveable story in this day and age, as he claimed some burbank cops beat him and left him laying. He could be a mouthy drunk, so I think I pretty well knew how it went. Anyway he was liveing with a brother that had a position with warner brother studios, kind of high up. "Carl" had just flown his personal airplane in from back east, was looking for a job with no car etc. We had somehow become friends and did a little flying together. He wanted to stay with me untill he healed up as he was for some reason ashamed for his high powered brother to see him all black and blue.
Somehow his brother did find out he was staying with me. He came over and talked with carl a few minutes, then said follow me out to the car, I have a stack of mail for you, and they went out together. Carl didnt have a shirt on and with his face looking like hamburger looked baaad!
Soon I hear someone swearing at someone and here comes carl running in the house with my neighbor hot on his heels a few feet behind carl. The neighbor is only wearing underwear shorts and screaming, I am gonna kill ya! The neighbor could have done it too, as he was a rough stunt man in the movie industry! He chased carl right into my house and I had to get in between the two. Come to find out carl had his head down reading his mail, went into the neighbors house that looked identical to mine. (It was two cheap rentals on the same lot). Carl later told me the neighbor and his wife were "getting it on" on the couch when he walked in!

It does open a whole new chapter in one's life. Did his homeowner's insurance cover the damage and cleanup? If anyone in the family needed counseling, who paid for that? Certainly not the thug or the state, even though the thug set that chain of events in motion. The thug is still alive and bears watching, lest he seek revenge.

I guess the message of this story is to keep spackle on hand.

I would hope the Invading creatures would be advanced enough to beam up their dead invader and tidy up.

I am staying inside today as they still do not know where the spacecraft is going to crash. Geese we can't even keep our junk floating in space.

What I am amazed at is that the intruder took 3 shots from a .40 S&W and didn't die, and from the picture posted above the shots appear to be near a chest level for a average height male.

If you use the correct caliber of gun, a home invader will usually fall after you shoot them.

When the wrong caliber, you may need to shoot them again and again and again.

I was thinking that those would be abdominal wounds on me, if their doorknobs are similar in height to mine. Looks like the three in the middle, bottom would be the ones to hit the perp. He was likely in the hospital for a few days, but those kind of wounds aren't usually fatal.

Depends on where you hit them. If you shoot me in the shoulder with a .45 ACP, I'm not likely to fall down. If you shoot me in the heart or the brain stem with a .22 short, I am. As Erich says, shot placement is key.

True enough. Shot placement is important. But I bet after I shoot you once in the shoulder with that .45acp, you will either leave in a hurry or sit down while waiting for the ambulance without doing anything else other than begging me to call for help. With that .22 short, it would have to be a perfectly placed shot, which is not likely under pressure.

I was going based on the height of the picture mounted on the wall. Usually pictures are mounted at a higher level for viewing purposes.

The first person that I saw die on the job was a home invader. This particular low life waited for a really large (fat) woman to cash her Social Security check and decided to break into her second floor apartment thru the front screen door while the woman watched him from her living room chair. The woman informed the guy that she had a gun (.25 auto in a bra) and would use it if the guy didn't stop what he was doing. The guy didn't stop and the lady unloaded three rounds of .25 auto at the guy from about 8 or 9 feet away. She missed with all three shots. The story should have ended with the three shots, however, the lady got out of her chair and waddled out of her apartment and over to the top of the stairs at the end of the building's second floor. The would be home invader stopped at the bottom of the stairs for some unknown reason and received a .25 auto slug to the back of his head from a top of the stairs lucky shot. I arrived from the 911 call about the first three shots and found the guy about to expire with the back third of his skull missing. The woman could (should) have been in a world of trouble for use of deadly force after the threat had passed, however, I don't remember what happened to the woman because back in the day, when the detectives showed up they took over everything.
At least a couple of things can be learned from this story:
1. Even the most helpless looking individuals may not be (helpless)
2. Any bullet at any range can be deadly

What happens after you shoot him? Is my gun empty? Why not?

Ok, the old joke: Two guys are hunting and the one gets bit by a snake. He's in cell phone range, so he calls 911. The operator asks if his friend is dead. After a few seconds the operator hears a gun shot. The caller gets back on the phone and says "he is now."

So what do you do after you shoot the home intruder. First, you make sure he no longer presents a threat to you or your family. Then, not taking your eyes or gun off him, you call 911. Then you call your attorney. Or a friend who is one, or someone who knows a good attorney. When the police arrive, you need to be not holding a gun or they may shoot you (or mistake you for the family pet and shoot you.) There's going to be a nervous moment. The ambulance will be there shortly if you've not done a good job of shooting the intruder. If you did your part, the coroner will be along shortly.

If you live in a gun friendly place, or know the police, chances are you won't be hauled off to jail. But its not unheard of. Common sense says you should say nothing. It can't then be used against you. But reality takes hold and you will need to identify yourself as the homeowner, and that you have no idea who the jerk is on your living room floor. But he's not an invited guest. With luck, there's ample evidence of his forced entry, like a big footprint on your door and a shattered door jam.

Then get ready for the worst day or two of your life. Make a doctors appointment for as soon as you can. At least get something to help you sleep. Call the carpet folks because the jerk either bled out and ruined it, or the police took a big ugly sample of it. If he failed to die quickly enough and kept suffering (good), he probably bled out or nearly so. Doesn't matter, you can paint the average size house with a few pints. You may even need to hire a biohazard firm to clean up the mess.

And call into work sick. You probably won't be able to do much anyhow. Plan on meeting with the attorney and giving multiple statements to the police, prosecutor, and various investigators. Forget the media, they're not your friend. They always get it wrong anyhow.

I left off my earlier post: Call whoever will loan you a gun to use while the police keep the gun you used. Plan on going shopping to buy one, too. But you'll feel much better with a backup gun. Allow for the possibility of the police confiscating all your guns until they work their magic. It the injured is related to some powerful politician, prepare for the upcoming lawsuit. He was a good boy, just turning his life around. He was planning on going to college to become a minister, or brain surgeon.

Just an observation... a lot depends on the angle of presentation. Also, if nothing vital is hit, nothing vital is hit. A man breaking into your home is not calm. His adrenalin is likely through the roof. Also the homeowner has almost never faced a home invasion and he almost certainly has never pointed a loaded weapon at another man. Doubtless his adrenalin is also going to be through the roof. Just thinking out loud. Sincerely. brucev.

I have to wonder why the home invader is out driving around and possibly still a menace to some other home owner? I did see the date of this story is current but when did the actual shooting take place? Did I miss something in the story, one would think a court would have sentenced this guy to something more than a week in jail.
