Both my native and adopted states go for Tootsie Pops. Odd, that.

I'm a gum drop orange slices man, myself, but those are no doubt considered unsafe for the wee hellions.

I'd cheerfully settle for Reese's Cups.

I think the last candy corn I ate had been marinated in hash oil, but that was in the '70's. :D

maybe I should have noted, that my fave candy to just sit and eat this time of year is that wonderful candy corn.

Decades ago when i went trick or treating? Probably those little "Smartees" did it for me back then lol.

I'm in!! Candy Corn DELUX!!

I remember as a kid in the 80's candy corn was common and very popular. I really liked it, but would stop at half of a handful. You really brought back some memories. Cool.

I recall my Mom or Dad (someone back home had to hand out candy after all :)) went with me and I hoped that there would be a Reese's or Snickers. I didn't grow up poor, my parents didn't spend money on candy except on special occasions. When I had an orange plastic jack-o-lantern full of my favorite treats...I thought I was wealthy! ;)

It says Swedish Fish are #1 in GA????????????
Never heard of em. They don't look so hot to me.

Reese's Cups SHOULD be #1 in every state. Divine. :D
I see they are #1 in only three states- IA, KS, and OR. Looks like it's gonna be a long night.

Now that there data is what sells the most, not necessarily what people want to eat. Then again, people who are buying in bulk through the mail are likely eating most of it themselves, same as something like 80% of Halloween candy bought at retail.

Even as a kid I thought candy corn was a low-level treat, seemed like you might as well just eat straight sugar. [Token old-timer rant:] Of course back then you were more likely to get a piece of fruit or a popcorn ball or some other home-made goodie as opposed to fancy store-bought stuff.

And what kind of psycho state would have salt water taffy be a top ranked Halloween candy? Oh, right...

Candy Corn tops the list in five states!!1

I don't understand.

Is there something wrong or unusual about this?

The stuff has been being made for longer than any of us have been alive.

Trick or Treaters no longer even come through our neighborhood, but I'll buy a bag of it just for myself. I'll stop short of putting on a mask, going outside and ringing my own doorbell, you understand, but still...it's only once a year. And the squirrels will eat what I don't.

My dentist, by the way, loves it when I eat the stuff. Can you guess why?

Let's get serious here: It wouldn't be Halloween without candy corn.

Man sure brought back good memories of Halloweens from my youth when we would bring home more sugar than found in most small countries! We covered miles and nobody worried about eating it.

Exactly right. I mean, this was back when grocery bags were made of brown paper, and we'd come home with the large ones at least half full of things most of us wouldn't even consider eating today. As I hinted at earlier, you could imagine dentists across the country rubbing their hands together and chuckling in anticipation of the dollars that'd be coming their way in the first week or so of November.

What I remember most about Halloween now, though, is that it was cooler in the fifties. There was a chill in the air here, and leaves were crackling underfoot as we went house to house, porch lights glowing, carved Jack O'Lanterns with candles inside grinning and leering at us. And often there was the smell of burning leaves in the air...it was legal back then to burn leaves in back yards and out by the street. We could see the fires, burning and flickering up and down the block, and sometimes we'd just stop and stand around the fire for a while. If some of us had gotten marshmellows for treats, we'd toast them over the fire.

Halloween was special then...it was fun for us kids, and we didn't need mom and dad to walk with us, either. There were no wackos protesting the day as some sort of devil's day. I don't remember anyone worrying about someone putting something bad inside candy or fruit or whatever. No gangs of thugs with guns roamed the streets doing damage to property or people. Halloween pranks...sure. But real damage? No.

Damn it, I've fooled around, grown up, and gotten old.

The candy corn and circus peanuts sure brought back good memories, not so much the candy itself but the fun, safe times we had as kids on halloween. Popcorn balls and homemade candies were my favorites. Seems we knew everyone is our small town and no one worried about eating anything they got.

my lovely wife that works part time at a diet center is a candy corn junky... my mother always checked to see if the circus peanuts were fresh... if they were we got a treat... dad liked maple nut goodies, he did his best to hide them.. well as for me... well about anything with nuts and caramel... or black licorice... Halloween is a time for us to go all out decorating and sharing the treats more than the tricks... with age comes wisdom...lol

Malted balls rule my candy cravings, but if it's in the candy isle, it's fair game...including candy corn.
