What is a 45 Auto Rim?

What is a 45 Auto Rim (AR)? When/why was it invented?

The 45Auto Rim is a round with a rim that is dimensioned to take the same space as the 45ACP does when it is used with moon clips. This allows the 45Auto Rim to be loaded, fired and extracted from revolvers in the same manner as standard rimmed ammo (38 SPL. 45LC, etc).

Orignally made for the Colt and Smith & Wesson WW1 1917 revolvers.

Loaded with a 230g soft lead bullet.

Might add that the .45 AR case has exactly the same capacity as the .45 acp case, so any load for the .45 auto can be used in the .45 AR by handloaders. Factory .45 AR was loaded to a lower pressure level than factory .45ACP, however.
