What is it with Blue Dot?

Diff powders do affect the amount of smoke with lubed lead. The bullet lube also has a lot to do with. BE & TG seem to produce a lot of smoke with most bullet lubes. So you can play with powders & diff lubes, but there will always be smoke with lubed bullets.

I looked at this thread a day or so ago and it was about the inferiority of Blue Dot powder. Looked at it today and it's about dirty, smoky bullet lube and foul powders like Bullseye. The most recent "smudged fingertip" thread was elsewhere last week, I think.

I've used some Blue Dot in several handgun cartridges (almost exclusively with my own cast bullets), though not recently. A cursory glance over some old notes indicates no outstanding accuracy with Blue Dot in any cartridge, but I may not have worked with it enough to give it a fair evaluation.

I've found Blue Dot to be one of those handgun powders that has somewhat limited applications for velocity and accuracy in a number of cartridges and its burn rate is in a general (very general for the hair-splitters) category that includes Power Pistol, Herco, and HS-6. That's probably not coincidental. While I've experienced good accuracy (and perhaps velocity) with these three in some applications, the niche where these powders' are most efficient is not a big one.

Please pardon this brief respite from dirty lubes and nasty powders....

I must say that your observation is right on;but that's the nice thing about these forums;they rake so large and are so interesting. We sometimes get carried on and digress a little.I guess that as long as it keeps being about shooting it is kinda OK!

As for your observation about Blue Dot and similar powders filling a narrow specialised niche,I must say that you brought a new dimension to my thinking;I might evaluate Blue Dot under a different approach;that of having fun developping a new load in a very narrow application.
Thanks for your comment.
