I was walking down some old train tracks and I found a large rubber cylinder. It is a solid piece of black rubber, 18.5" long by 2" wide. There is a seam down the sides and on both ends so it was purposely molded into this specific size. Anybody have any ideas what it is for?

A picture would help. My guess is also something off of a railcar.

firestrat-if you don't change your avatar, there is no way I can take anything you type/say seriously. :D I crack up everytime I look at it.

Maybe a old railroad dick`s persuader? Anyway sounds like you might keep it handy for that!

It's a brake hose.If you mount it on a metal tie plate
it will serve as a batting T for kids.

It sounds like some sort of vibration damper.

Otherwise, it's a large rubber cylinder.
