Those following this show are familiar with the Ferg's model 29 but this seems to have been replace by a shorter stainless revolver. I'm guessing maybe a model 629 but i cant get a clear view and imfdb is no help. Also, The grips make me think maybe he switched to a .357. Perhaps the department got him a new sidearm to go with his spiffy new squad car!

I dont know. . .rubber grips and what looks like [to my eyes anyway] stainless. His 6" 29 was very obvious in the early seasons but it sremed to have gone the way of his blue trans am in later episodes. Im going to have to review previous seasons i guess.

Whatever movie prop they had on hand for this year.

Last season, it looked like a Model 27 to me. This season, when he smoked the Irishman, (sorry if that's a spoiler), it looked like a 586. Just a guess on my part.

A gun?

I can't recall specifically, but didn't Ferg's 29 get taken from him last season when the mob "interrupted" his prisoner transport and he got roughed up? That would necessitate getting a new sidearm.

Oh, i bet youre right! Forgot about that.
I know the writers arent the saviest gun enthusiasts bit continuity would require a different firearem. Like a .357 service revolver

What's Long Colt?

:D

The basic .45 Colt. Some used the term because there was apparently for awhile a .45 Short Colt and some also wanted to distinguish the true .45 Colt from the .45 Schofield.

Elmer Keith is the only writer I've read who noted the Short Colt. It evidently wasn't popular or long lived. But if Elmer said he'd seen it, I believe him.

In the first few seasons the gun appeared to be a large bore N frame with a nice set of target grips. My guess was a model 25 or 29. A 27 or 28 is a possibility but in most scenes the barrel near the frame doesn't seem to be bottle necked down enough for a 38cal.

In some episodes the grip seemed to change to a set of very worn looking magnas. Made me think it was possibly a worn Model 28 could even be a 10.

In the latest season the gun was certainly a stainless steel or nickel version. The bore looked pretty big when he shot that Irish guy. In some scenes when he draws, the barrel appears to be an underlugged profile. My guess is a 625 possibly a 629.

I was disappointed to see somewhere through the seasons he lost his leather holster and gun belt and opted for a cheap nylon uncle mike style holster.
