I know this has been asked many times.

I found one at the local gun store and the price is $799.

Here in the metro Phoenix area, I have seen them priced from $729 to $799 at LGS. I looked at a 686 - 3" five days ago in Scottsdale that was priced at $799 while they had a 4" sitting right next to it priced at $729. I asked the salesman if the price tag was incorrect on the 3", since it was $70 more than the bigger 4" and he said No - the extra $70 was for the popularity of the shorter barrel.

I passed on the 3" since it had a canted barrel. In fact, 6 out of the last 8 Model 686s & 627s that I have looked at in the past 3 months have had canted barrels. Looks like it is going to be long search finding a 686 with a straight barrel in the Phoenix area.

Bob has the correct price for a current new 3" 686. Depending on the exact model (the CS-1, for example) an older one may go for $1000-1300.

I see new 686+ 3 inchers range from $650 to $750. Usually closer to $750. I believe I paid $700 for the new one I bought a few months back.

When you look down the top strap and barrel they should both visibly line up; apparently many current production revolvers have the barrels over- or underclocked, meaning they are not at exactly 12 o'clock or upright.

The canted barrel occurs when they screw the barrel onto the frame without aligning the front sight with the rear; the barrel is "off" by some degrees.

Just got back from an another LGS that just received a 2.5" 686. They had it marked at $728.99 for cash. Had a perfectly straight barrel and locked up very tight. Thought I had finally found one that was put together right. Then I saw the scratch on the side of the top strap - not too bad, in fact I was willing to live with it.

However, I then noticed what looked like a circular rust spot on the side plate, near the recoil shield. Sales lady gave me some CLP and we tried to rub it off, but no luck. It appears to be some kind of chemical stain that discolored the stainless steel on the side plate - just ruined the cosmetics of the gun.

So, the search continues.

Regarding the canted barrel issue. What the other posters stated is correct. The 686 models have ribbing on both the barrel and the top strap of the frame. Those rib lines should line up perfectly as you move from the barrel onto the top strap. As others stated, if the barrel was screwed into the frame too far, or, not far enough, the ribbing on the barrel & frame will not line up. Depending on the severity of the "cant" it may or may not have an impact on sighting accuracy. But it sure ruins the cosmetics of the gun and gives the impression of a sloppy assembly. The 2.5" model I looked at today was dead-on perfect.
