what is the real story on the 686

I'M WITH YOU PIZZA BOB. THE FLAK IS GETTING SOOO THICK THAT ITS TIME TO ABORT THE MISSION AND HEAD FOR HOME. THIS WILL BE MY LAST POST ON THIS THREAD ALSO……

I CAN ---SOMETIMES---MANAGE TO TAKE OUT THE X-RING, AND KEEP 30 ROUNDS IN ONE RAGGED HOLE WITHIN THE 9 RING OF A SLOWFIRE TARGET @ 50', FROM THE BENCH, WITH MY 8 3/8" NO-DASH 686. ITS EQUIPPED WITH A ULTRA DOT, 30MM RED DOT SIGHT. I MUST REST THE RECEIVER AND TRIGGER GUARD ON A ROLLED UP TOWEL, BECAUSE I ONLY HAVE ONE HAND/ARM/EYE THAT WORKS. UNFORTUNATELY, ALL OF THOSE WORKING PARTS ARE ON THE LEFT SIDE OF MY BODY, AND I'M RIGHT HANDED. I HAVE AGENT ORANGE RELATED NEUROLOGICAL PROBLEMS, AND I'M NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO HOLD THAT HEAVY REVOLVER STEADY WITH JUST MY LEFT HAND. I CAN STILL BANG AWAY WITH MY 2 1/2" AND MY 4" MOUNTAIN GUN UNSUPPORTED, HOWEVER…..

I HAVE BEEN SHOOTING REVOLVERS FOR OVER 50 YEARS, AND MAINTAINED AN AVERAGE IN THE LOW 290s IN A BULLSEYE .22 LEAGUE FOR A COUPLE OF DECADES--WHEN I WAS IN MY PRIME. I'M NO JERRY M. BUT I DID NOT JUST FALL OFF THE TURNIP TRUCK AND LAND ON MY HEAD, IN FRONT OF A PISTOL RANGE. I FIND HIS CLAIMS HARD TO BELIEVE. I'LL BET THAT HE'S A HELLUVA FISHERMAN ALSO…….

HAVE FUN, FOLKS…..

Excellent advice!

A few posts have been deleted. When someone makes thirteen posts in the same thread berating S&W products, it's safe to assume they're either trolling or have an agenda.

This thread makes an amusing read:

OK guys, I'm not normally one to brag, but I feel obliged to show you a little of my talent, too. Here's a group I shot this morning, 10 shots, double action, simultaneously firing both of my personally enhanced Model 642's at 100 yards, double blind folded.

I do a little revolver smifin' too in my spare time. These have what I call dual charged turbo kahlxers, which help provide such astounding shooting performance, and are a carry-over of a project I developed in my spare time for NASA Space Exploration. That's all I can tell you about that for now, you will understand.

So please explain to me rugers firing system, I have several with no pin on the hammer and have had for years. All along I was under the impression they were similar to smiths mim. But honestly they all shoot well both brands so I never dug deep into the works of the guns. I have more older smiths than new, my complaint is the hole in the newer models but that's a cosmetic issue. Perhaps my guns are flawed.

This thread has made me doubt my 686-6 purchase :(
The -6 engineering revision of the 686 has been around for 14 years now. If there were something wrong with the design, we would be hearing about it from more than one person

However, if you truly doubt it, you can send it to me. I have no fear of modern manufacturing techniques and will give it a good home for you :)

In a modern S&W, the hammer strikes the firing pin and then the firing pin strikes the primer. When a S&W trigger is at rest, a steel hammer block sits between the hammer and frame that prevents the hammer from moving forward.

In a Ruger, the hammer strikes a transfer bar, the transfer bar strikes the firing pin and the firing pin strikes the primer. When a Ruger trigger is at rest, the transfer bar is withdrawn so that the hammer can not go far enough to reach the firing pin.

Did you install the high speed exhaust port roller bearings?:D

I'll take 'em... PM inbound :D

But I suspect you may have cheated by using laser guided smart bullets.... hence the blindfolded ability :D

Yeah... yeah... Make out the check to "cash" and I will send a PM with information regarding a PO Box where you can mail the check...

COOL! Tell you what... when I get the PO Box address to it send to, how about I send you my winnings check from the Nigerian Lottery, you can cash it, keep whatever the cost of guns are and then send me the difference back via certified check with the guns... :D:D:D

Conundrum

This thread has made me doubt my 686-6 purchase :(

I think I understand what you mean.

So now if I understand correctly, my two 686+ (both 686-6), one being a Talo 3" Edition and the other the 2015 Performance Center 2.5" are "suspect" if I decide to carry concealed and may not go bang or even worse, misfire completely when needed?

I'm almost afraid of what would happen with my 642-2 or 640-1 stainless engraved J-frame models or even my 1911sc "E" Series if I needed to drop the hammer.

And I KNOW I am going to have problems with both Kimber Stainless Raptors (both series 80) if I decide to pull them out of the safe for a ride (although I have swapped out the slide stops on both for Wilson Combat Bulletproof parts).

Not sure what to carry for defense any longer...maybe I'll just have to bite the bullet and carry my Beretta Billennium 92FS stainless 9mm. It's a beast but I don't think it has any offending substandard parts in it.

Confusion reigns supreme but I guess I'll just have to take my chances.
