I picked up some factory loaded .44 Magnum ammo that is not in the original boxes and I'm trying to identify it. I have 20 rounds of what I'm sure is Black Talon. The weight is 250 grs., correct? Can anybody tell me what the velocity is supposed to be out of a 4" barrel? It doesn't look like it has any collector value without the original box and I'm wondering what kind of recoil I can expect out of my Mountain Gun.

Personally, I would not risk the health of a good pistol or revolver by shooting unknown ammo in it...the more so if it was only 20 rounds...but that's just me.

I would not.

Frankly I would not fire the ammo in any of my guns. Why take a chance? Ammo from a unknown source, no thanks.

It's your revolver so it's your choice. But I would not consider firing unknown ammunition of any type through my firearms. It just isn't worth the risk to your gun. As to the effectiveness of BT ammo, it was a step in the right direction. But that is all. When the BT was more commonly available, I fired some of it at watermelons behind the house. I was not particularly impressed. Nowadays for SD/HD there are much better choices available. JMHO. Sincerely. brucev.

What they said. Who knows what it is or what it will do in your gun. This is how those internet pictures of blown up guns happen.

i dug out an unopened factory box that i have here...it does not carry that information on the box

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear. I bought this ammo from an old gentleman whose son died rather unexpectedly. A friend of mine knew them very well. There's no doubt that it's Winchester factory ammo, but he never saved the original boxes for any of his ammo, and he had a lot of different stuff. It's nickel plated brass, red sealant on the primers and a black hollow point bullet that looks exactly like the Black Talon in all the other factory loaded calibers that I have. I'd just like to know what the velocity is.

Tests I have seen on the net...NIJ among others...show them at around 1325fps from a 6in barrel assuming they are the 250gr load. (I have no idea if that was the only Black Talon load for the caliber back then)
