It is the trigger stop and is designed to stop the rearward motion of the trigger just after the sear releases.

does this make it more special than the other ones without it?

There is a concern that if the screw loosens, the trigger stop can rotate far enough to keep the gun from shooting. I have never seen it to happen, but it is completely avoided just by leaving that little piece out.

The illustrated revolver has an aftermarket target rear sight, and if it is an IDPA SSR, would benefit from the trigger stop. I hate backlash in a trigger and would want one in a target pistol. Maybe not a duty gun.

is $525 a decent price seeing how it doesn't have the original grips or sites?

Seems a bit high to me, original box and paperwork is worth at least $50 if it's not there. The rear sight appears to be a Millet which would be a improvement to me, but doesn't make it worth more. I believe that is just part of the trigger mechanism behind the trigger, nothing else.

That price seems about the going rate for a clean 686 which that one appears to be. I have a no dash 686 that also has the trigger stop. When I asked about it a while back, I believe somebody said the trigger stop was eventually removed due to above mentioned concerns (possible malfunction). S&W might have used up frames that still had the little slot even though the trigger stop piece was not installed. Also, I heard that department armorers or owners sometimes removed the stop themselves. My m66-1 has the slot but no trigger stop.

I've never had a problem with a trigger stop.

ok thanks I have had alot of hesitation about this pistol. I paid $300 for the one i have 13yrs ago.

I was thinking of adding a trigger stop to the 686-1 I bought recently...It has the slot. My Model 15 has the trigger stop, and I like it.
Who sells them, and is it just a matter of taking off the sideplate and screwing it on?

They may be hard to find but if you can find an older LEO armorer you could be in luck finding one and the screw that holds it. S&W advised all armorers to take the trigger stop out of LEO guns because it could become loose and stop the trigger from working properly. Not a big deal to put in, just adjust it to allow the hammer to fall when trigger is pulled.

I Traded tha very M686 to an older gentleman @ a Gunshow in Cave City KY a few months ago for a M649 bodygaurd..
That's it too..
Millett rear sight, overtravel on trigger, hogue grips, polished frame..
Just had the M recall done by S&W too!
Give me a email if you want any more details..
