This little thingy on the back of the trigger guard cams out and prevents the drop pf the hammer at times. I never really shot this gun much and had this happen recently. I dont think any of my other smiths have this. Thanks, Ted:confused:

I believe that it's a trigger stop. In the back of my mind, I seem to recall that these were removed on later iterations of the gun because of the problem you describe.

The pictures show me that the trigger stop is canted a little off. That would cause your problem. BruceM is right, you should remove it.

It actually cants in and out as it wants. is it hard to take out, I have never even had a side plate off.

It's a trigger stop. Many owners remove it because it has been known to come loose, fall inside the gun and interfere with the mechanicals. I have it on several models and have never had a problem. Removing it does not affect functionality. I remember it being optional on my 66, no dash. You might want to have a gunsmith check it out. I've never had a problem with it.

it is a trigger over travel stop, it is just a small screw that holds it in and has come loose, if you use it for target shooting no need to take it out, clean all dirt and oil from the area and just slightly tighten it down and adjust it to stop the rear-ward travel of the trigger to just as it releases the hammer.use some locktite and firmly tighten the screw down. you will now have a trigger that will not throw your shot off .
If used for protection just unscrew and remove it.

There are people looking for these cams and screw so you could offer it for sale here.
