I'm new to the AR platform! What grain ammo should I be using with this riffle?

It will probably perform the best with 55 gr and 62 gr, but every rifle is different. You may find that your rifle stabilizes everything between 40 and 69 gr.

Welcome aboard Tony. :)

I use 55 and 62 in mine. For heavier grain you'd have to find out by shooting it.

Same here - 55 & 62 so far. I've been ordering brass range ammo from Palmetto State Armory - about 33 cents to 38 cents/round.

Haven't bought any hunting ammo yet though.

I've been buying ZQI 556 NATO 62g penetraters for $10/30 rnd at Walmart. That's the cheapest I found so far.

I use Federal xm193 55gr for range fun, and I have Federal Power-Shok 64gr JSP for zombie apocalypse-type situations.

I've squirreled away about 400 rounds of that Wally World ZQ so far. Tough to beat that price especially when its single boxes of 30 rnds. Easy to just slip a few boxes in while getting lifes essentials.

The stuff seems good for getting a feel for how mine shoots. Paper targets and milk jugs full of water type stuff. I'm sure I'll become more discriminating as time and experience increase.

Whatever is cheapest.

I have some more pricy varmint rounds I use for coyote hunting. Aside from that the cheapest **** I can find is what I shoot.

What would happen if you shot 77 or even heavier bullets? I know the 1 in 9 is not ideal for that kind of round but what will it do? Do you get 10" groups at 100 yards? Or will it hit sideways? If the bullet does not stabilize well what happens at 300 or even 600 yards? In all my research it just says don't use it. ..What if it's all you have?

Accuracy will suffer and the bullet may keyhole...

I shoot mostly 55-70 grain bullets in my 1/9 twist. 69 grain MatchKings(hand loads) give me the best accuracy. I have shot Hornady 77 grain factory ammo and was pleasantly surprised with the accuracy. Try some 75 and 77 grain ; it may shoot well for you. Each barrel is unique and performs differently.

I just got an M&P 15 Sport for $538+tax (my 1st AR) and straight out of the box, fired about 150 rounds of 55gr WPA steel case ammo made by Barnaul thru it without a single hitch. I'm so impressed that it's able to chew and spit out cheap FMJ ammo that I'm getting another M&P 15 Sport for the girlfriend. The price for a brick is $225 + $16 shipping @ sgammo right now.

I just ordered 500 rounds of Silver Bear .223 steel case 55gr FMJ from Bulk Ammo. It cost $140.00. We'll see how it runs. I've been using American Eagle 5.56 at .50 cents a shot, but that's from Turners so I could get to shooting.
I haven't been shooting for 4 weeks because I had to get my boy off to college and my daughter is getting married on the 18th in my backyard..... and I'm itching to go blaze some rounds!

Thanks for the info... I just purchased some ammo from them! :-)

Thanks for the info... I just ordered some ammo from them. I could only afford 500 rounds... :-)

My 1:9 Smiths digest anything up to 75 gr, but I admit to not shooting past 200 yards on my home range. My usual handload consists of a 52 gr Sierra MK and H335. It's easily a sub moa load and what I normally shoot when I'm not letting a newbie shoot up my stash of XM193.

+1 for bulkammo.com. When I bought my "real" AR (I had the 15-22 first) I also ordered 1000 rounds of PMC 55 grain FMJBT (it was $355 out the door including shipping) rounds through bulk ammo. The ammo arrived just a day or two after I got my rifle. Zero issues, ammo was as advertised. I would buy from them again.
