I would like to know what kind of cleaning solution and oil to use on the M&P Sport 5.56? I just purchased my AR and also bought the viper boresnake. Any help out there? Thanks!!

You can use any name brand solvent and lube, or even a CLP. Breakfree and Weapons Shield come to mind. I have been using Frog Lube with good results. Balistol is a good cleaner and lube too. Even Hoppe's #9 and Rem Oil will work.

When I was in the military, all we were issued was BreakFree CLP and it seemed to do the job. I don't know if it's the same stuff commercially available now tho.

I use Frog Lube as well for cleaning, lubrication and protection. Frog Lube is an impressive product, non-toxic, and it will make your rifle smell minty fresh. That's not a joke either, it will actually smell minty. Love it.

I use Frog Lube on mine. There are plenty of good lubricants and cleaners out there and they all work. I'm sticking with Frog Lube for now.

A word of caution:
WD-40 is an excellent cleaner, but not a great lubricant. Because of the high operating temperature, it will "cook off" any WD-40 left on the gun. So, if WD-40 was used as a lubricant, most of it is gone by the end of the first mag.

Therefore, you can use WD-40 to clean, but follow it with a real lubricant.

Google "stuck boresnake" before you use it. I know they are popular, but the chances of having problems goes up exponentially as the bore size decreases.

M-Pro7 is good stuff. I've used both the cleaner and oil, and have no complaints. Non-chlorinated brake cleaner will flush the crud out fairly well also, Froglube or Mobil 1 will provide great lubrication when used in minimum quantities (like Brylcreem, for those of you old enough to remember it, a little dab will do ya). ;)

Congrats on the Sport, you have lots of company here.

Good Luck and good shooting. :D

Jeez if I see one more cleaning products thread or should I buy a Sport thread... ;)

Seriously, pretty much anything will work. Diesel fuel and bearing grease will get the job done, as will the old standbys like #9 and hoppes/rem oil. Personally I like SLIP2000 and Mil Com TW25b, others like Froglube, others like M-Pro products, etc. Can't really go wrong with any of them.

I use Hoppes #9, Weapon Shield, and Tetra Grease. I've used #9 for the last 40 years and it's always done a good job. Just about any of the popular brands will do a decent job.

Oils

I use FP-10, rem oil, Hoppes also sometimes CLP when I can find it. I like also Tetra gun grease. I have also heard that you can use Mobilone motor oil.

I used to use M-pro7 and it did a good job, but I've switched over to Ballistol. Reason being, it's been around for over 100 years and has been proven as a cleaner, protect and, and lubricant.

Mobile One 10w-30 mixed 3:1 with synthetic ATF, and Hoppes #9. Be sure and use a chamber brush before you clean the bore.

It seems to me that using what the military uses is a pretty good idea. There are no "nuclear secrets" involved in cleaning the AR/M16/M4 direct gas impingement guns. I am not sure if it is still the cleaner/lubricant of choice, but Breakfree CLP has always worked fine for me.

I've been down this road and tried everything from off the shelf motor oil to specialty gun oils with quasi mythical properties claimed by their respective marketing departments. This is just my opinion. Find what works best for you and your wallet. I'm done experimenting.

Traditional Solvent: Hoppes No.9
Traditional Lube: Mobil1 synthetic motor oil.

All-in-one: Breakfree CLP

All-in-one non-toxic: Ballistol

Grease: TW-25B

This is all I have in my kit now.

As far as cleaning tools go, I've tried most of them.

I've been shooting my semi-auto rifles more over the past couple months. I'm not motivated to do a detail cleaning in between weekly range trips. The Viper Boresnake does a good job of removing most of the fouling from the barrel. Good for a rifle that gets shot often.

As with anything else, there's no free lunch. The Boresnake is quick and easy but doesn't do as thorough of a job as traditional rod, patch, jag, brush cleaning.

Don't forget that the Boresnake only cleans the bore. You'll still need an AR chamber brush to clean the chamber & lugs.

Good luck!

CLP is a decent do it all cleaner, lube, protectant

Hoppes #9 is the traditional bore cleaner, and works well for cleaning

WD-40 is good for cleaning gunk and carbon from the bolt/carrier guts, but like others said, it's a poor lubricant.

Get yourself a quality cleaning rod and some AR15/M16 chamber brushes.

I like the DEWEY cleaning rods.

AR-15's like to be clean and wet, . . . .wet with lube.

I use MOBILE-1 5w30 for lube, it's cheaper and seems to take longer to burn off.

Learn to field strip the weapon and clean it often
keeping the chamber clean is very important.

chamber brush, available at brownells, midway, Amazon, gunshows, etc...
