is there anything bad about mounting near the handguard? I've never heard of it causing any problems, and the two areas look pretty flush to me.

Notice the riser that Blackbeard has. See how it hangs over onto the handguard top rail. Not a big deal but that's why I suggested a one piece scope mount designed for an AR that will help to to push the scope forward for enough eye relief while staying on the receiver.
Ideally, you want a scope to be mounted to the receiver, not a flexing plastic handguard. Now with the riser that acts like a reinforcing bridge, no big deal. However, here is a pic on the first page of our picture thread that shows a ring on the receiver and a ring on the handgaurd. That's really not the ideal way to mount a scope.

Phil!
Are you referring to a One Piece Mount like this?

Looking on amazon there so much to chose from. Narrowed it down to these.
Going to use it for target shooting. Not so much for tactical stuff but want a tactical look. Looking to spend around 100-150$. LMK if u know other ones that might be better.
Here is the one I recently purchased for my son's rifle
3-9x42 P4 Sniper Compact Scope With Quick Mount - AR15 M16 M4 SCOPES by Combathunting.com
It is a great scope, but he just likes the red dot and wants it back on. So I'll be taking it off and throwing it up in the classifieds shortly
speaking of properly mounted optics. phil how bout posting a pic of that 700 and its new glass that Ive not gotten the pleasure of cuddling
the only downside to the PEPR mount is how high the optic will sit, ideally you want it the lower the better. If i remember my calculations from a long time ago, I think centerline sits around 1.6'' high. With the rings you can get it as low as .5'' or whatever half the objective diameter lens is; whichever is smaller.
