What kind of scope to buy?

is there anything bad about mounting near the handguard? I've never heard of it causing any problems, and the two areas look pretty flush to me.

Ideally, you want a scope to be mounted to the receiver, not a flexing plastic handguard. Now with the riser that acts like a reinforcing bridge, no big deal. However, here is a pic on the first page of our picture thread that shows a ring on the receiver and a ring on the handgaurd. That's really not the ideal way to mount a scope.

Notice the riser that Blackbeard has. See how it hangs over onto the handguard top rail. Not a big deal but that's why I suggested a one piece scope mount designed for an AR that will help to to push the scope forward for enough eye relief while staying on the receiver.

Phil!

Are you referring to a One Piece Mount like this?

This is my Vortex Strikefire, with an AR One Piece High Mount. It has six screws, three on each side, to hold the Scope in place. Very solid!

BTW, that's not a mount at the rear of the scope. It's the Lens Cap mounted upside down, so it doesn't give me a blind spot when it, and my front Lens Cap are open. They both fold down onto the rail.

Cheers!

Hey just wondering, how much the scope and rings cost, thinking about changing my mind on optic to that nice looking thing and set up.

Nice looking Beretta you have there. I have been thinking about getting one.

What I'm talking about is a one piece scope mount like below. This is a Burris AR-PEPR mount specifically designed for a flattop AR platform. It sells for about $60-$70.

speaking of properly mounted optics. phil how bout posting a pic of that 700 and its new glass that Ive not gotten the pleasure of cuddling

Looking on amazon there so much to chose from. Narrowed it down to these.

Going to use it for target shooting. Not so much for tactical stuff but want a tactical look. Looking to spend around 100-150$. LMK if u know other ones that might be better.

Here is the one I recently purchased for my son's rifle
3-9x42 P4 Sniper Compact Scope With Quick Mount - AR15 M16 M4 SCOPES by Combathunting.com

It is a great scope, but he just likes the red dot and wants it back on. So I'll be taking it off and throwing it up in the classifieds shortly

the only downside to the PEPR mount is how high the optic will sit, ideally you want it the lower the better. If i remember my calculations from a long time ago, I think centerline sits around 1.6'' high. With the rings you can get it as low as .5'' or whatever half the objective diameter lens is; whichever is smaller.

Also you guys need to check out Quality optics and accessories from Leupold, Bushnell, Burris, Nikon and more! if you want some of the best scope selection online, real easy to compare prices and features across many different manufacturers.

heres how different the scope position was when i tried on vs not-on the handguard. I sort of like the spacing in the rings better when its on the handguard, however I think I might just go with a smaller scope alltogether and save that badboy for a target .308.

Well sure... :)

Badger Ordnance steel rings 30mm low height sequentially numbered 10895 & 6. Badger Ordnance steel 20MOA base... using Loctite Red 271 between the reciever/base, and base screws. My guess is that it should be pretty solid.

Sub MOA ain't bad for an out of the box rifle with an old blind fat man at the trigger. :D

Well ya... but getting a proper cheek weld and eye alignment with the optic is far more important. It's pretty difficult to do that on an AR platform with the eyepiece nearly sitting on the receiver. A rifle like my Sig522 is not problem to put the scope as low as possible because the stock sits much lower than my 15-22.
