I want a 629 to carry as a backup gun while hunting. Most of its use will be plinking. I don't want something so big that I would not carry it. I do not want a ported barrel.

I'm intrigued by the models with 4" to 6.5" barrels. They have somewhat similar weights, but the size is very different.

I'd appreciate everyone's experiences thoughts, especially those that made a change along the way.

FWIW I love my 4" 625 PC.

I have been happy with my 5 inch 629. I have carried it hunting in So. Az. and hiking here in Va. Seems to be a good all around revolver. Very accurate with a scope setup for 100 yards and portable without the scope when carried in a strong side holster.

I have a 4" 629 Mountain Gun and 5" Classic. To me, the 5" seems a much much "bigger" gun than the 4". When I want to carry as a sidearm only, I carry the Mountain Gun. If I think I may have a shot at actually taking a deer with it, I'll carry the 5".

The 4X4 of handguns is a stainless 4" 629,
if you like the MG version or the scandium model
that's cool too
People who have the 5" guns seem to really like them,
I have more 4" guns then anything else, but a 5" classic is on my very short list

I sure can not answer YOUR question, but,

when one of these goes out, it is ALWAYS the 4"!! :D

I can shoot it more accurately than the two longer ones, and the shorty is just a safe queen!!

The accuracy may be due to the dozens of 500 round boxes of reloads through it. Sweet trigger, no hiccups, my go to revolver.

The most I ever shot it was 900 rounds late one Sunday afternoon. Luckily, the neighbor agreed to help by feeding the Dillon so I could get them reloaded in a reasonable amount of time. :)

I have a 629 Classic with a 6.5" barrel. I always carry it deer hunting because I'm looking to bag my first deer with a handgun. I carry it in a vertical shoulder rig fairly comfortably. Yes, it's a bit heavy and you certainly know it's there but it's not unbearable. I am 6' tall. If you are somewhat vertically challenged and have a shorter torso than I have, I could see where the 6.5" N-frame would be more uncomfortable to carry.

My $0.02

I have a 4" and a 6 1/2". Used to have a 5" long time ago just to be legal to hunt with but never warmed up to it. For hunting I like the longer sight radius. For woods boppin 4" is my fav. because is more compact. Like you, no like porting.

The 5" lying around here somewhere is the most recent of the 629 acquired and it is a real peach. Had heard tales of folks loving the 5" length. I'll agree.

Usually I go with the 629PC 2 5/8" for backup on the hip and the 5", 6.5" or 8 3/8" in a bandolier holster.

Shoot... Just realized I need a 4" 629... Grrrrrr...

Length (of a 629 barrel) is a personal choice. I think 6" would be a minimum for hunting, but something shorter for a backup. 4" is just about perfect for OWB holsters, 3" for concealment. A 6" barrel is hard to draw from a high ride holster, but just fine in a western style, shoulder or tanker holster.

My personal choice for backup is 3" and concealed, if I don't think I'm going to need it. If I think otherwise, I'll carry a rifle, probably a 45-70.

I have three 629s, a 6.5" -4 Classic, a 6" -1 and 5" -3 Classic DX.

Our son hunts with the 6.5", I use the 6" as a paper-puncher and my favorite is the 5". In that frame size, it just feels the best balanced to me while still having enough barrel length to get good velocity out of full-power hunting loads.

A 4" in a quality OWB crossdraw Holster with a quality Gun Belt. Comfortable and doesn't interfere with a shoulder slung rifle. (Assuming that you are right handed).

For plinking and carry as a back up to your rifle, I recommend the 4". If it were my primary hunting arm or if there were a possibility of an occasional bowling pin shoot, I would opt for the 5" version.

I love my 629-3, 5" Classic DX's one scoped and one with a Hi-Viz, however the guns I carry most is either my 329PD 4", or my 629-4 Mountain Gun.
