What movies have you always avoided ... but later ... WOW !!

Everyone should watch "Dr. Zivago" once. Watching it twice will have you questioning your gender.

For comparing remakes, my fav is Cape Fear, Mitchum versus De Niro. Mitchum plays the role as more bad a**, De Niro more as a devious lunatic. I give the edge to Mitchum for best lead role, but the supporting cast is better in De Niro's version.

Just an FYI on one of my SURPRISE great movies .... "Ryan's Daughter" is scheduled on TCM early morning 1/31. The cinematography alone is worth a look (as is Sarah Miles :))

We recently watched "A Walk In The Woods" with R Redford and N Nolty. I passed on it for a while because I thought it would be boring. It's not slap stick or fall down funny, but situationally and subtly humorous. Both gave great performances and work well together. It's a low budget gem. Well worth the time investment.

Saw Dr. Z in old school theater in downtown Indianapolis.
Didn’t think that *** would ever end!
One more slow pan of the empty tundra and I’ll just lose it!
Larry with those Arabs, same - same!
Never watched either one again!

Top Gun Maverick- Don't care for Tom. Thought it would be a sleazy remake. Dang what a great movie.

Cowboys and Aliens - You gotta be kiddin me, right? Turned out pretty darn good. Daniel Craig emulated Steve McQueen.

John Wick - Previews had me thinking this was about the occult or something. Boy was I wrong. Great movie(s).

Gladiator - Thought it would be too gruesome and violent. Saw it later and, what can I say, one of the best films ever made. And the music!

Yeah, John Wick was a great movie. If you've not already seen it, check out "Nobody" with Bob Odenkirk. :)

Stalingrad was an epic movie that I'll never watch again.

Well done, great acting, historically accurate.

And totally depressing. The Wehrmacht soldiers are average Fritz and Franz, not SS Nazis. Decent guys you start to like.

At the end, you're wishing they'd die just for they wouldn't suffer anymore.

Not a Crowd Follower

In my seventies, i am proud to testify that I have still not seen, nor plan to see neither "Love Story" nor "Star Wars". My clue to stick to my guns was that my non Viet Vet friends with "college", rejected my urgings to see "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" because of my "non college" appreciation. I however much enjoyed "Five Easy Pieces" and "2001 Space Odyssey".

When you tell a Star Wars fan that you've never seen the movie, the reaction to that statement is likely to be as entertaining as the movie itself.

I've never seen a single movie from the "Rocky" franchise. Still don't plan to.

But a movie I avoided, and then really enjoyed, was "Bohemian Rhapsody". I figured it would be pushing an agenda, if you know what I mean, but it really didn't. I thought it was an excellent film, and I'd watch it again.

Barry Lyndon...

Okay all, I tried....I really tried. I figured by 1:15, when he agrees to spy for the Prussians, I was done...cooked...baked...burnt. Time of my life I can't get back.

I can't believe this was the same director who gave us The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, 2001...etc etc

"Five Easy Pieces" and "The Last Detail" made me a fan of Jack.

In the VHS hey days I got from EBAY expensive copies ( 10$ plus shipping) of lower than D grade films, Gone With the Wind, Giant, Hawaii, Being There, ... Possibly the most boring film, but was actually quite good: Picnic at Hanging Rock. I only watched that one all the way thru to see if it would get better. It Did Not.

Lawrence of Arabia.

A stunningly good movie my girlfriend insisted we see. She even paid for the tickets.
