I am back in the USA now and want to buy a S&W. I am looking at a 4" Model 66, 4" Model 67 and a 686 Mtn Gun. I want it for hiking, camping, traveling and self defense. I have had all of them in the past but, with the economy and lack of a large amount of funds to spend at this time, what would you folks recommend? and why? thanks for all you replies.

The 686. Versatile, light, and powerful. Good for home defense, concealed/open carry, and hunting small game up through deer. Just pick the right .357 ammo for the application and you're ready to go. The gun is a great plinker as well using .38 wadcutters.

My vote is for the 686 Mountain Gun! Stronger than the 66 and light enough for your outdoor activities.

I've been where you are and looked at a lot of the same guns. I ended up with a 3" Model 60. I found it was much easier to carry in the outdoors, versatile in ammo selection, very accurate, and able to double as a CCW. IMO, it is as close to an "all purpose handgun" as there is. Plus, there is a $50 rebate on new guns until the end of the year.

Have fun on your quest...I sure did.

I gotta go with Sportsterguy on this one. The 686+ dash 4 Mountain Gun is what to look for. It's a 7 shooter with NO LOCK, and a great revolver that will handle all of your needs....

The Mod 66 would be my choice. The K frame is a ittle lighter than the 686 L frame. in the mod 66 you have the added advantage over the Mod 67 of shooting 357mag. Plus I just like the K frame better.

Thanks for all the replies. It seems like it is between the Model 66 and the 686 Mtn. Gun
