What optic would you choose?

For an AR pattern rifle, 223/5.56, shot by several people (family & guests), maybe as far as 200 yards. Rifle already has a rail and no front sight.

I am looking for simple, easy to use, long life on the battery, low profile, and relatively sturdy. Will have to survive rides in the ranch truck and field use in most conditions (hot, dusty, occasional rain/mist).

What say the AR experts?

With that type of use I might go with Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x30 because of the reasonable cost and unconditional VIP warranty. And it's not a bad scope either.

I agree. An Aimpoint is easy to hit with out to 200 yards. Maybe its not optimal at 200 depending on the size of the target but its doable. Easier than with irons for sure.

At 50ish yards, the Aimpoint IS optimal.

I've got a rifle similar with a Leupold VX R Patrol FireDot, 1.25-4 zoom range 20mm.

I would look at a 1x4, or so, variable power scope with an .223 / 5.56 type illuminated reticle. You can spend a lot of money if you wish, but Nikon, Vortex, and Bushnell make very serviceable versions in the $150 to $250 range. They work with the battery off as well presenting a non illuminated reticle. Makes hitting a little easier at range, and they still work well up close.

If you want to go red dot only, the Vortex Strikefire II and Sparc are nice for the money, as is the SIG Romeo 5. All about $150.00

Of course if you want top notch, then various Leupold, Burris, Aimpoint, Trijicon, ect. are available, but probably not really needed for your use.

I have Vortex Spitfire AR prism scope on my AR. Battery life has been good. I'm happy with it.

A Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6 or 1-8 would be a great choice. Runs on a 2032 battery with a compartment for an extra under one of the adjustment caps. Also has the unconditional lifetime warranty. If you ever break it they will replace it.

Depending on how much you want to spend, consider the Aimpoint Comp M4s or T-1. I've used both when I was in LE. They have excellent quality control/quality assurance. They may be "overbuilt" for your purposes but I don't want to recommend some other red-dot sight of which I know nothing about and with which you may have problems. I would be doing you a disservice. Both of these platforms are built like tanks and will take much abuse. They will at the very least meet the expectations that you list. Most likely they will exceed them.

Trijicon ACOGs aren't cheap but are worth every penny IMO. That said, Vortex makes some quality stuff.

Yet another recommendation for the Vortex Strike Eagle either 1-6 or 1-8 power. The scope is designed for the AR platform. The scope also comes with a throw lever, when I bought my scopes the throw levers were purchased separately.

I have Vortex Strike Eagles on all of my AR's.
