What size screwdriver?

What is the size of the screwdriver used to remove/reinstall the magazine catch/latch (I've seen both) on a Colt 1911 Government model?

I know about using the doohickey on the end of the spring, but this is beyond that.

My ignorance grows by leaps and bounds.

The slot is .150"....so a .120"-4 bit from Brownells fits perfect. Any small screwdriver though can be modified to fit if you don't necessarily want to order one.

You do realize that you have to push the magazine catch in as far as possible before trying to turn the "catch-latch" don't you? To remove it turns to the left. The small "tit" on the spring should be completely adequate if the catch is properly pushed in first!

Another reason I have always liked the 1911 , as John B. designed it , is you don't need a tool kit or any special tool to field strip one ... seems like I never have the right size screwdriver around when I need it .
that old boy was a pretty darn clever gun designer wasn't he !

Of course it would Just showing the OP how easy it is.

But one does not need a super duper special gunsmith screwdriver to remove it.
I certainly believe in the proper tool for any job, so a basic set of "smithing" drivers should be had by all. but if not, a small Craftsman, Stanley or whatever will work just fine.
One does not need a "rebound spring tool" either to remove a spring.

I get that it's a "thoughtful" design, but I can only imagine how awful that screw head and the surrounding territory would look after I fumbled around with that makeshift tool (spring end) for a few minutes.

Actually, although I probably sound like one, I'm not a 1911 novice. I've built and worked on many 1911 style pistols over the years, and currently own two of them.

1911 owners can also use a spent .45ACP casing as a recoil spring plug, although I would certainly not recommend this practice to others.

Get yourself the Large set of Magna-bits from Brownell's with the Law Enforcement style magnetic handle - you will be set! They are excellent for non gun related use also and are guaranteed for life.

AFAIK I do believe they are still made in the USA by APEX which is the best you can get! I have Apex bits for over 35 years that I still use on a daily basis!!
