I have a relative that has a NIB Model 629 4" barrel Smith that he wants to sell me. I would like to buy it off of him but it is from the early 80's vintage and I wont pay current retail! Would $500.00 be an insulting offer?
Suggestions and opinions wanted.
Thanks!

Yes and if they've done their homework you wont get it.

The "early" 80's vintage could be a no dash gun which is pinned and recessed. NIB 4" would be worth much more $800-$900 + (IMO)

If it's a dash - 1 , a little less.

I'd go in there with a little better offer if you really want it. Plus it's family

OH....and WELCOME to the Forum!

629 no dash with the 4" barrel was only made one year,1981. if i am wrong someone will correct me.

well,
$500.00 is about three hundred more than a shop will give him as a trade in but about $100.00 less than he could get were it priced for a quick sale. i don't see him realistically getting more than 650-700 for it unless it has some special feature (such as pinned and recessed or some special run or desireable commemorative) open the cylinder and see if it is stamped in the frame 629 or 629-1 or -2 etc.as previously stated some dash #'s are more desireable than others. other factors are, is the case a wooden presentation case or the cardboard box, are the tools and all papers in there. fwiw i got my 629-1 for 400.00 and was going to buy another about a year ago for about 550.00 but didn't get the funds together quickly enough. any how i don't think 5 bills is an insult(dealers will insult him if he goes that route) but it'd be a darn good deal on your end.
Regards,
Rich

Thanks for the advice guys,
I am going to offer $500.00 all he can do is say no!
I have also came across a Model 29 -3 in a wood presentation case that a friend I work with has from his fathers collection and he wants to sell it. The prices on those seem a lot lower than I expected. Take a guess on what thats worth!

WELL I offered $500.00 for it , and he said OK!
So I guess I am the Proud owner of a Model 629 4" barrel NIB.
Sometimes you get lucky , but one other thing , I find price values vary from state to state. If you tried to get this in California for that price, I doubt very much you could.

A well made gun from that era is better than the junk SW makes now. It has forged parts and no lock. That makes it worth more than the current guns in my book.

VM,
I believe he said it was a dash 3.
I do not have it yet, I am in PA and the gun is in Vermont. Will try to post pics when they get it to me. Will probably be after the holidays.
