I just responded to another thread about a nice Smith someone just bought. It reminded me of several (thankfully not too frequent) dumb decisions I've made selling some of my collection.

A short while ago, I went to the Reno show with ...what I thought were a couple things out of my collection I was willing to trade or sell, to augment my collection. Then after the show was over, I was really unhappy with myself.

I sold a beautiful 629-6 4" and 14-3 6" under BB, for little less than I had in them. What for?? I'll never figure that one out. Don't those kind of deals make you angry?...I know....except if you're the buyer...

The year before that, I was looking for a 2.5" M19 for my son. I found a beautiful, like new, hardly a drag mark, early 90's Colt Python 2.5" for 1,050.00. That night in the hotel room, I was comparing the action to several Smiths I had and I was disappointed. I wasn't that impressed. But I had always wanted a Python. My son told me over the phone, he really didn't want to pay that much and wanted a Smith M19 2.5" like mine. I sold the Python the next day for 1,100.00. Wow, a whole $50 profit, and I found a nice M19-3 for 425.

Have you seen the price of Pythons lately?? I know this is a Smith Wesson forum...but, for crying out loud! 1,100.00 bucks for a beautiful blue, 2.5" Python, that many are willing to pay double for?

Well, I hope this is the end of my dumb selling mistakes.

I just thought some of you might have a tear jerker or two to share about what slipped through your hands. After hearing about some of yours, I might not feel as bad. I have one more...but it's too painful right now...:(

I sold a 3" barreled Model 65-3 for emergency money to pay my bills. That was the last time I ever sold a firearm for that purpose. Still kicking myself for it. :(

In the early 80's, I traded a 1970 Armalite AR-7 for an ES 335 dot neck. Even though I sold the guitar years later for a chunk, I have come to regret it.

Oh, well.

I bought a 3 digit Colt 1911 in a pawn shop for $375 back in the late eighties.
I sold it a few months later for $700 to a dealer at the Astrohall gun show, and felt I made out like a rat!
It was a beater, but I should have kept that and my Python. :)

I bought a new 4" python in 1976. Sold it to a friend in 1983 as I was scrapping up cash for the down payment on my first house. My friend still has it and I get to shoot it once in a great while, like being with an old high school girl friend again.

In 1984 my (then) wife and I decided to buy our first home and we had to come up with a chunk of money. I sold about two thirds of my firearms collection to come up with the money, keeping only the ones i really shot or needed on a regular basis. This collection included a S&W M25, a S&W M57, a Shiloh Sharps in .54, a Remington 788 in .243, and about another dozen less remembered guns. She filed for divorce about six months later. Oh, she also got our five acres of vacation property outside of Coeur d'Alen, Idaho, in the divorce settlement, but I didn't sell that - she did.

I forgive you for reminding me. ;)

I traded my pristine 1st year 6 1/2" model 29 for a new, in the bag (they don't use boxes for some reason) 9mm Hi Point. At the time it seemed like a good deal....but after I quit the Hi Point forum and joined up here, I started to regret it.

Stay away from the Crossroads at midnight!
I would not mind having my old first model Savage 110L in 270 back.
Not an expensive or rare gun, but a super shooter with a lot of my memories in it.

I sold a 1955 unissued Polish M44 Mosin to help finance my SR1911. Turned out I didn't really need to sell it. Beautiful rifle... :(

Oh, the M29-1 8&3/8 I sold <sobs>

Other that that, the divorce rectified most of those mistakes...and as a bonus, I can honestly say I believe in the Hereafter, as I have personal experience with one of the lesser demons...

Once again you people keep reminding me of what I wish I hadn't sold...... Please Stop It!!!! :o:mad:

I sure do like the 32 w/ pearl handles & the 38-44 Target.

Well after reading these responses I'm going to do my best to never sell any of my hand-guns! Haha

Not a sale, but a trade - I traded a Model 60-7 for a CZ-75 in 9mm. I met a really great forum member, and I think both of us were happy with the deal, but man, I miss that Model 60.

Regards,

Dave

I had an FN 5.56cal FNC back in the '80's that I paid around $400 for new. The wholesaler bought it back a couple years later for $1K. Didn't need the money but I was an FFL and business is business. Not a particularly popular rifle and very few were imported. Joe
