What was your first gun?

64 years ago my Grandfather presented me with a model 74 .22 automatic. I was almost 8 at the time. Remember those greased/lubed. 22s that were guaranteed to keep your pockets free of lint? I still have it today. My Grandson and I shot it not long ago.

A Winchester Model 74 was my 1st gun as well. Unfortunately it was stolen out of my room when I was in college. I have a couple of other ones but it's not the same. Ironically it only functioned reliably with Remington 22s and didn't handle Winchester ammunition very well.
I do still have my 1st pistol which is a High-Standard Sport King with both a 4" and a 6" barrel.
It still gets shot on occasion and I intend to pass it on down to my grandchildren.

1966, I was 16. Remington model 582, bolt action, 22 caliber, tube fed with a K-Mart 4X scope. Best Christmas ever. Still have it.

At the age of 13 a friend of mine at school came up with a 16 ga single barrel shotgun. I'm sure it was an old Savage! The barrel had been cut back to about 24 inches. His mother had a hizzy fit and he had to get rid of it. So, for $4 it became mine!!!

Great toy for going down to the pond and shooting snakes.

Then we moved from Missouri to California and MY mother said NO WAY is that going. So, I gave it to a friend before heading West.......

If BB guns are included, it would have been a Daisy "Red Rider" given to me by my Sponsor for my Confirmation.

1st gun was a J.C. Higgins 16 gauge bolt action shotgun given to me by my parents for Christmas when I was 15 or 16. Several years later I got a P38 that my dad brought back from WWII.

All three are long gone.

My Father had a close high school friend who was killed during a hunting accident. I was the oldest of four children, all of whom were forbidden to have a gun or go hunting. At age 15 I convinced my Mother that I should be allowed to have a gun and to be able to go hunting with my friends. With her permission, I purchased an Iver Johnson 16 ga. single shot at the local hardware store. I kept the shotgun at my friend's home for about a year before I had the courage to tell my Dad what I had done. After a month or so of grumbling, he went to the same store and purchased a Remington 870 for his own use. From that day forward we hunted together. There are many great memories associated with those two guns and both get occasional use as turkey-getters. 59 years later, both are proudly maintained in near-original condition and displayed in a prominent spot in my safe. Someday they will be passed to my Grandson.

Mine was an Ithaca-Model 49 Saddlegun. My 12th birthday present. (seemed much bigger then...) I still have it.

Single shot .410 shotgun. I was probably about 8 yrs old. Used it for squirrel hunting. Nice gun, had a little gold plating on it. Don't recall the brand but I suspect it was Steven's if it made such a gun.

A Mossberg Model 380, .22 caliber, semi auto rifle with an unmarked, 4 power scope sporting a 3/4" tube. I was eleven and got it for Christmas. I remember that when it was revealed, from behind a chair in the living room, it took my breath away.

It was an "okay" shooter but, came with no instructions for the rifle or the scope. My dad had no idea how to adjust the scope and had never shot with one. I suggested removing the elevation and windage covers although at that time, I had no clue what they were either. My dad didn't think that would be a good idea.

I soon learned from a friend how to adjust the scope and zero the rifle. I shot a lot of the "yellow" box Winchester .22 Super X ammo and while it jammed some, if I kept it heavily lubed, it functioned pretty good. I traded it many years ago and upgraded to a Browning lever action .22 rifle but, it didn't last that long either.

The first shotgun was a Savage 311D, 12 gauge. The first handgun was a Ruger Single Six Convertible.

I was fortunate to grow up with a dad who was, except for scopes, knowledgeable of firearms and who had a modest collection. I still have all of his but, my "first" firearms were traded for upgrades later in life.

Still have it! That rifle use to go everywhere with me.
First real handgun was a Ruger New Model .357

Can't remember which was first but the first two were a Remington 870 and a Ruger 10/22.

This has probably been posed as a thread before. But, I thought it would make for some interesting reading.



I am 67 y/o and my first gun was given to me at age 8 by my grandfather. It was a Stevens over and under .22 LR on top and .410 on the bottom. Cannot even begin to guess how many squirrels and rabbits met their demise at the wrong end of that little gun.



BTW: I still have it.

1938 Winchester 67-22. My g-pa taught me to shoot and respect firearms and the 2A when I was 8 years old...with that very rifle.

Shortly before he passed away in 1994, he had it refurbed and put away, with instructions that while my two uncles were to divide up his knives and guns, the 22 was to be saved for me.

My grandma kept it until I finished college in 1997, then gave it to me. I'd figured my uncles had taken it and I'd not have a chance to see it often. Imagine my surprise when she showed it to me.

I still have it today. In fact, I'd gone almost 19 years refusing to shoot it, as I didn't want to "spoil" the nice refurb work. But my wife reminded me that g-pa gave it to me for a reason, and that he'd probably wanted me to shoot it and think about all of the great memories from those times we spent out in the coal mining hills of WV.

So last spring (2013), I took it out to the range and shot it. She was right. So many memories.

And...I have used that very same rifle to teach her the fundamentals of rifle shooting. I'm pretty sure that my grandpa is smiling down on us over that.

I was 15. I talked my mom into letting me buy a Ruger Security Six, 4" blue, made in the 200th year of American Liberty, from a friend of my uncle's. I remember how disappointed I was when I looked at the bore. It was a 357 Magnum! I was expecting the hole in the end of the barrel to be a couple inches across, at least!!!!

A 1978 vintage 29-2 6" blued bought gently used in 1980. Original owner was a young Army troop serving in Europe. He fired it a few times then sold it to me when he wanted money for something else. Came with the box and tools. I did the paperwork and brought it back to the USA. I still have it.

When I was 10 years old in 1952, my dad gave me a new Marlin 39 for Christmas. I still have it and will be giving it to my 12 year old grandson soon. Last year, I gave him a T/C Hawken. My first shotgun was a Mossberg 20 ga bolt action. I still have that one also.

Brand new Ruger 10/22 Carbine. Bought it myself when I was 18. $69.95 from a store that sold guns, trophies, and Boy Scout supplies. Still have it. Sent it back to Ruger once for a factory re-blue/rebuild many years ago. Haven't shot it since...because I have another one for that. D
