What was your first new-bought S&W revolver?

I bought a new 28-2 4” blue in 1977. I sold it to my brother in the early 80’s to finance a new Python 6” that I kept until a couple of years ago until the prices went out of sight and sold. I Then talked my brother into selling it back to me and I still have it. Wonderful revolver. I’m planning on keeping it now.

My first brand new S&W, and also the first handgun I bought with my own money, was a 625-6 Mountain Gun in .45 Colt. I read an article on it and ordered one the very next day, taking delivery in the beginning of June 1996. Paid $425 plus tax. That price seems like a steal now, but it was more impressive at the time as I was only making $7 an hour. I still have it, one of my favorite revolvers.

It occurs to me that although I’ve owned about 100 S&W revolvers since being given my first (a 28-2) in 1989, very few were purchased new. Other than the 625-6 the only others were a 19-7, 625-7, 442-1 and 340 M&P. I mostly buy the guns I wanted in the 80’s and 90’s but couldn’t afford when they were new.

My first and only “new” S&W is this 2015 vintage 60-15.

Easy to carry and a joy to shoot (up to +p).

All others in my modest collection - J’s and K’s - range from 1968 to 1994 and were purchased “used”.

On the hunt for a birth year gun, though... (1955)

If my math is correct, I own 14 Smith and Wesson Revolvers. I have never bought "new" as in brand new from a store. A couple were presented as "NIB" by the sellers that I purchased from, but I don't think that counts here.

When I first came on our department my off duty gun was a nickeled Charter Arms undercover that I purchased because it was relatively inexpensive. After a year or so I wanted to upgrade and the police supply company happened to have a new Model 36 in nickel under the glass in the gun counter. The undercover was ok but not on the same level as the Model 36. My head swelled a bit walking out with it. That was in June of 1979. The first of several S&W’s purchased with the LE discount. I still have it.
Question, my 36 came with a sight adjustment tool but not a bore mop. Were SAT’s supplied with some fixed sight revolvers?

686-5Plus 5”

After I turned twenty-one, all I knew was that I wanted a .357magmun. So I proudly walked into one of the LGS asked to to see a .357. The salesman showed me the revolver and I was sold after I was told, “it’s a seven-shot”. My friends and I enjoyed the times of shooting and I enjoyed the times cleaning it. Still in excellent shape in original box.

This was long before the S&W collecting had started and glad now my first gun was a S&W. I had no idea what I had bought at the time, later the find out it was a “stocking dealer special”. 686-5 plus with a 5” barrel, hi-viz front sight and v-notch rear sight.

This one gun later started the craz to buy many more 686s. And yes, the bantams were on it when I first saw it sitting in the glass case.

I literally can not remember the last NIB revolver I bought. In fact, I bet it was a Dan Wesson SS 41 pistol pack in about 1980. I have never bought a new S&W. I just like older used guns.

My first New S&W was a model 19-4 bought in 1981. Had target hammer/trigger, red ramp front site, white outline rear and a rich deep blue finish. It was probably the worst gun S&W ever made from the Bangor Punta era. The first time I shot it and went to eject the shells the cylinder fell on the ground. Two of the cylinders required more trigger force to shoot and there was always some problem with the gun. Like a fool I kept it for 20 years but I vowed to never buy another S&W again.

Wasn't till 2003 when I purchased a 66-5, 2.5" barrel that I got a winner.

I purchased my first brand spank'n new S&W revolver right after I saw an inspiring article in "Guns & Ammo, or some such magazine. I don't know the year exactly, but S&W were supposedly making 3,000 4" barreled 625-6's in 45 colt, labeled as a "Mountain Gun". Mid 90's is about as close as I can get to guessing when it was.

I went to Tilford's Guns in Louisville the very next day, and asked Jack if I could still get one. He looked it up and said "Yep, I can have it here in 3 or 4 days."

So I ordered one. I'm still not sure how I was smart enough to order one that day, yet dumb enough to trade it off some 10 or 12 years later. I mean I got my money back & then some in the trade, and I carried it deer hunting, atv riding, and woods walking a lot! But the winds changed, and I suddenly needed a 1006. (which I don't have anymore either, but I still have the 1076 KSP I got in that trade)

The closest I've come to replacing it is a 25-5 (45 colt), and a 625-6 (45 acp). I'm keeping them both, but I sure miss that Mountain Gun.
