I made it to Third Class EM {Electricians Mate}, but got in trouble and lost it. Me and My big mouth!!!
One time a WW2 Vet. Chief said to me:" Boy with a mouth like that ,you`ll never see 21"!
He`s probably rolling in his grave ,since I`m at 70 and counting.

USMC Sgt E-4. In 1959 after reporting in to my new duty station after a tour in Japan was told that the Corps had added E-8 and E-9 and E-4 was now Cpl E-4. I had just passed my S/Sgt. E-5 test and was told my next rank would be Sgt. E-5. Was just married and going to re enlist, after eight years i decided that i would never achieve the rank of M/Sgt in 20 years and decided to leave. Peacetime rank promotion's were very slow at that time. Ironically when the Vietnam War started many of my friends that stayed rose in rank guickly. I look back on my service in the Marine Corps fondly and glad I served. Life is good and everything worked out OK.

Sp4. Platoon Sgt put me up for E5 when I had about 90 days left. Turned it down because I was getting out and a promotion wouldn't change my mind. Told him to give it to one of the guys that had 18 months/2 years left. That way the Army would get their moneys worth and it would get an E4 out of the squad bay and off the excrement detail list.
