What were YOUR first guns?

My First Were

Age 12

Gifted by Maternal Grandfather
LeFever Nitro 20 ga.
Remington 512 22Lr.

Age 18

1st Pistol US Government 1911A1 w/ Military Shoulder Holster
1st Rifle Remington 788 22-250

Don't have any of them but I rounded up replacement LeFever & Remington for my Grandson.

First purchase of my own - ~ 1976, a hardware store S&W 10, 4" heavy barrel, square small grips... $100... Probably a local LEO trade-in, but no wear. Was a great shooter even with the limited frame-cut rear and short ramp front sights. Sadly, I don't have it now.

Never got my hands on my dad's rifle and shotgun - had a Stevens 16 ga single shot, and a Sears catalog 22 rifle with a tube mag, bolt action, that he said he bought as a kid for about $15 in the 1930's... No idea what kind it really was. Both culled a lot of squirrels, rabbits, and pests. Mom got rid of them without telling me.

The first handgun was a Ruger Single Six with a .22 magnum cylinder. The rifle was a semi auto .22 Mossberg with a 4X, 3/4" scope and the shotgun was a Stevens 311D, 12 gauge double barrel. Those are long since gone but, on for Christmas, when I was 16 years old, I received a Colt Huntsman, .22 LR.

I still have the Colt, the box, docs and warranty card. I "loaned" it to my daughter, six years ago to use at an indoor range in the town where she was a PHD candidate but, she never went to the range. I brought it home from our last visit with her and the son-in-law. I simply wanted to shoot it again and it is still a sweet shooter! It will go back home with her on their next visit and I will give her the box, docs and warranty card.

She's earned it and more!

First two that I bought with my own money...that my parents didn't know about....Marlin Model 60 .22lr and a H&R Single Shot .410 shotgun.

First two guns I bought at a gun store..

Remington 870 Express Combo (with the 28" Barrel and the Slug Barrel)
Another Marlin Model 60 (parents confiscated the first one)

First guns I ever shot:
S&W K22 Outdoorsman that I brought home from my parent's house yesterday.

By age 12, I had progressed to the Ruger Blackhawk .45 Colt with the 4-5/8 barrel as my favorite. That one is on my list for later. My mom and dad both still shoot that gun...mom finds it to be quite effective for dispatching possums and coons in her barn (she will be 84 in a couple of weeks). Dad has several S&W revolvers in .44 and .45 calibers that I plan to purchase as he is ready to part with them. I'm pretty sure I have shot all of them at some point in time as we spent a lot of ours together target shooting.

First gun I owned is the Springfield Ultracompact .45 that my husband bought me for Christmas when I told him I wanted a gun to carry. That is one I will never sell. Very accurate and just a really nice pistol. I love how it feels in my hand.

I've never shot many long guns and just really enjoy the pistols.

My first rifle that was "Mine" was a Belgium made Browning BAR in 300 Win Mag that my father gave me. Thing kicked like a mule. I traded 10 hours of labor to have it re-blued by the gun shop I was working at. Well worth it!

First Guns

It was f the Fall of 1967 and in my closet I had the following, High Standard Double 9 (22lr) Ithaca 37 20ga. Marlin 336 (35cal) and a Remington 572 (22lr) By the way: my closet was on the 7th floor of my dormitory room on the campus of UNC, Chapel Hill Northf Carolina. The local hardware store had a new Winchester Model 12 in the gun rack for $256.00 that I could only dream about. It was long time ago. I still own 3 of those 4 guns plus a small collection of Winchester Model 12's, High Standard 22 pistols and Remington 22 rifles. I am thankful of the privileges, that living in this Great Country still allows me. MAGA Country

I don't remember the first gun I was given, but I do remember the first one I purchased with my own money. I bought a new S&W 629 with the money from my first summer job.

My first gun was a 12 ga. Diamond Arms (St. Louis Mo) single shot with a 30" full choke barrel.Got it when I was about 10 years old, killed many a tree rat with it and still have that old gun.

Steve.......

Another amendment

I would like to amend my account of what my first gun was, as I had overlooked my truly first gun. Whether it was operable, is questionable, but, it was defiantly my first. In 1935 my Dad found and gave to me a side by side, double barreled, cap lock, Black powder, pistol to play with, when I was 4 years old. I had forgotten the house that we lived in then, and it just came to mind. A neighbor boy stole that gun from me me, and I never saw it again. We moved to our next home when I was age 4, so I know the date and my age, at the time is correct.

I've done it again. I have overlooked my absolute first firearm, a mistake easily made when looking back, into the past 85 years. at age 3, when my family visited with my aunt, and uncle, my uncle would let me look at, hold, and admire his old .16 ga. Winchester Mod. 97 shotgun.

This old gun had been loaned to family members, that didn't have guns of their own, to hunt with. This old gun, alto sound as a dollar, had very little bluing, or varnish left on it. At one point the bbl. had been shortened, to 24" over all, and a Polly Choke added to eliminate a bulge in the bbl, due to being shot with snow in it. needless to say the old gun looked terrible, but looked just "Hunky Dory" to me.

My Uncle Ott, bequeathed that old gun to me, with the stipulation that when I reached the age of 21 yrs. that it would be mine.

I acquired my own shotgun, for hunting, many years before my 21st birthday, and when I reached 21 yrs., of age, my uncle Ott asked to use the old gun for the rest of his life. I agreed, and we hunted together for many more years.

That old Gun didn't come into my possession until many years after my uncles passing, as my aunt Bess couldn't bear to part with it, but, she finally did, and now it's one of my most prized guns.

The story of this old Mod. 97 came back to me in a rush, and is much longer, but, I've condensed it. Thanks for letting me share it.

In order: Benjamin Model 347 .177 air rifle - 1968, Winchester Model 190 .22 - 1971, 1903-A3 and Krag Jorgensen - fall of 1975, Smith & Wesson Model 10 Heavy Barrel - Christmas season 1975.

All are still on hand except for the Winchester Model 190 .22 automatic rifle. It wore out two trigger groups and finally went away. In a fit of nostalgia I bought another Model 190 while at a gun show on a whim a few years back. Don't have a real plans for it. Was really a kind of cheap-o design.

My dad's bolt action FW Heym .22 single shot was number 1. My first purchase was a Remington Model 788 in .308 Winchester. I still have both. ;)

My very first gun was a Daisy lever action BB gun when I was about 8.
My first non-air gun was a .22 semi-auto from Montgomery Wards when I was about 12.
The first gun I purchased myself in 1977 was a S&W 916T. I still use this with a slug barrel for deer.

Winchester Model 67A single-shot .22 for my 6th bday
Savage 220D single-bbl 16 Ga when I turned 8.
S&W Model 17-3 K22 when I turned 17.

Still have all three.

Also just noticed this is a resurrected post and this is my 2nd reply.

In a somewhat similar beginning to the first post, my first gun was this Mossberg 341 22 rifle (S,L & LR) that Santa Clause brought to me when I turned 12. I cannot even begin to guess at how many thousands of rounds I have put through this baby. My Dad taught me early on how to clean and take care of a gun (anytime you shoot it!), so that it still looks great some 50 years later. I don't recall when I first started shooting, but I used to beg Dad to let me clean the guns when we got back home.

My first handgun was also a Ruger Standard, that I bought used in 1976 for $15. Times got tight about 1981 or so, and I ended up pawning it for what I had in it for groceries for me and my new bride. (If I could turn back time.....) It looked just like the OP's internet photo to the best of my recollection. That 22 rifle also brought in rabbits, squirrels and many a frog leg for table fare. If I could see it, I could just about be guaranteed to hit it with that rifle. I'll have it until the day I die.

Thanks for the memories John!

I started shooting Dad's Winchester model 63 and Colt 2nd series Matchtarget.

By the time I was 10 I would carry one or the other by myself in our woods regularly.

Mine was a m94 Steven's 410. My son used it and his son now has it.

I learned to shoot pistols with Dad's 3 screw Ruger Single Six. I still have it.

I learned to shoot high powered rifles on Dad's pre 64 m70 in 270, he was a Jack O'Connor disciple, I still have it. In 60 some years it has brought home several truck loads of deer. Not all in one year, ha. I've brought home deer from MO, KS, WY and Co with it after Dad gave it to me.

In 1954 when I was 8 he took me with him to buy the m70. He told me someday it would be mine. As a naive child I thought someday meant a million years. Today at 71 I realize my earlier conception of a million years was a tad off. But the m70 and I can convert deer to Chili with one 3 pound squeeze.
