So there's a 4046 I can get at a good price.

But I don't need a 4046: I have a 4006TSW CHP (my bedside gun), 2 .40 SW99s (for carry, one compact on 4"), and a Sig 226 & Sig 250 (DA0).

But it's a decent deal and I hate to pass it by.

So what can I do with it? Convert to DA/SA, but then I'd have essentially another 4006. Slick it up for a range gun (but the Sig 226 handles that job very well). Convert to 10mm, but then I'd have to buy 10mm ammo, but maybe that ain't all that expensive and I'd maybe have a 10 for a lot less than I've been seeing them for. (Is it a good idea to convert a .40 to 10 or will the 10 beat the hell out of the frame/slide?)

Something else?

So what would you do if you needed a semi-plausable excuse to buy yet another gun ya really didn't "need?"

OOPS. Should have read about .40 to 10 conversions before posting. Just read here the 4006 family (including the 4046) is too "small" to handle the 10mm. The smaller 40s ala 4013 and CS40 can convert (someone called them underbored 45s) but the 4006 herd (and they called them overbored 9s) can't.

Ok, that rationalization is down the tubes, now I need another.

Sorry Redcoat, there is no real justified need for you to buy this gun. It’s really just up to you to determine if you can afford it and if you want it bad enough to spend the money. I’d you’re loving it and you have the coin, buy it and enjoy. If it’s a hardship then maybe pass it by. There will be other deals.

Right now 4046 (non-TSW) coming out of Brinks are going cheap - many at or under $300. There were 4046TSW Brinks 300-400 but they are gone - Neither were pretty guns - mostly rode hard and put away wet.

Story was they were issued each day and returned end of shift - to explain how filthy many were. I have both a 4046TSW Brinks and a 4046 Brinks (and a 5946TSW Brinks) - they seem to clean up OK, but expect to do some heavy cleaning and replace recoil spring and probably grips.

There are also some non-Brinks guns incl some near NOS that are going higher, but selling very slowly due to saturation of market with the Brinks guns.

So it boils down to (a) condition (Brinks or non-Brinks), (b) how good a deal (compared to other 4046 not to 3rd Generations in general), and (c) how much you want another gun.

Dont know about your area, but 40S&W hard to come by here and more expensive than 9mm - at beginning of Covid it was the opposite - plenty of 40S&W and scarce 9mm. I am not shooting much 40 as a result.

If the prospective 4046 of which you speak is NOT a TSW model, then you won't even be able to convert it to DA/SA.

So if you don't love it for what it is (DAO), it will never be anything else.

"What would you do with a 4046" that I only bought because at the time the market was flooded with surplus 4046s making their price low? Been there, done that. After the flood was mostly absorbed by the market I traded it for a single stack 3rd generation model that fits my hand better. Around 20 years later I'm still enjoying the single stack pistol.

Also, since you like other double stack DAO pistols you might enjoy the 4046 for a long time. Their trigger reach is shorter than the DA on your 4006 which gives better leverage making it easier to shoot DA shots. The ammo shortage will pass, sooner or later.

This last week I had an opportunity to buy a 4006 , real cheap . It was from an estate sale , didn't see much use . I passed on it . I'm not a semi auto guy ( I have tried ) so it didn't mean anything to me . My feeling is if it doesn't mean anything to you , then leave it for someone that it does . Regards Paul

I think you've been bitten bad by the S&W bug . You see a Smith semi auto and you need an excuse to buy it . Guess what ? You don't need an excuse , if it's for sale and you have the money , buy it . I was bitten myself , I have Smith semi autos I still haven't shot . But I got them at good prices , so they can sit in my safe and I don't feel bad .
