What would your “bug out” handgun be?

I don't know. I guess I'm only bugging out if it's too toxic to stay. If so, probably grab my pocket LCP Max, couple 9mm pistols and pump 12 ga. and bunch of ammo cans (heavy!). Some camping gear, food, water, first-aid kit then head to a forest preserve (have a lot of those here). Otherwise, I'm better riding it out at home.

I've said this before but during The Waldo Canyon Fire we were on pre-evacuation for three days. During the fire an entire neighborhood (Mountain Shadows) burned to the ground. After that I quit assuming that I would be able to simply "Bug In".

Last Summer (2022) there were two wildfires within a couple of miles of our home. The entire neighborhood (not my neighborhood) was put on MANDATORY evacuation.

We decided that if we ever had to evacuate we'd be better off ANYWHERE but a government run evacuation center. We put some camping equipment in the back of our car and updated our evacuation kit.

Anyway, if we ever have to evacuate I'm taking my Mini14 and a Glock 19.

Don't much plan on leaving. I guess if I did it would be to one of the WMA's areas, I have 4 or more within an hour. My EDC's 686 3" and 642 would be my mains. I would also take a 12 Ga pump or semi-auto, probably Ithaca M37 Stakeout.

My bug out vehicle is a long wheel base, high roof Dodge Sprinter. If I bug out I'm bringing more than one handgun. I have a plethora of .22's and 9mm's and they are all coming with.

Hey, my dead end gravel road has drawbacks. Gas, Cable come to mind.
Been there a few decades. No handgun is up to my defense plan.
308 and 20 rd mags work for me. Pretty sure the Army training started at 50 mtrs, out t0 300. Had to score to get out of basic. I call that motivation.
So far, so good. My military worries mostly included nuclear missiles.

LOL
My thoughts exactly... those of you who live in Montana and Wyoming, imagine the rest of us heading your way, in cars packed with dried food and grandchildren, armed to the teeth.

That's an interesting thought.

I don't think we'd be able to bug out. We're already bugged out.

Won't be needing to bug out living where we are. No place to go, and our neighbors are in the same boat. We'll tough it out unless an asteroid smacks us, or the Yellowstone Caldera erupts; then, it won't make any difference.

Hello, my choice would be my beretta 96 A1 ( 40 s&w ) with a model 92 barrel to swap out. Extra mags and a box of 9& 40.

Bug out handgun? I’m already in the lodgment and I don’t think I’ll be running anywhere whatever happens. If I were to choose to move around during the apocalypse I’d probably choose a high capacity 9 and an AR in 5.56. Seems reasonable given the availability of those platforms and ammo. Not that I would own anything of the sort just to defend my tiny acreage.

Didn’t read this one before I posted, so… if the National Recreation Area across the road from our property we’re to burn, I fully agree, high cap 9 and a 5.56.

I'm going with my Glock 17 as well as taking the barrel and magazines from my Glock 22. (Or I could go in reverse). When thinking about ammo resupply, The Australian Defence Force use 9mm while the majority of Australian Police Forces are still using .40S&w.

Wow. Replies run the gamut from "we gonna do some hunting," to "we gonna be prepared for a firefight!"

Neither is true of a post-apocalypse scenario.

The guy who carries his whiz-bang, ultra-capacity 9mm is deluded into believing he's going to "win" some kind of shoot-out.
The guy who carries his whiz-band magnum revolver is deluded into thinking he's going to "do some huntin' along the way," during the bugout!

"BUG OUT" by definition means you have to grab what you can and get out...get ON THE ROAD, not likely in a nice warm, enormous pickemup truck, but WALKING...with your kids WALKING, and your WIFE walking! The entire GOAL of all government forces deployed is to get YOU out of any vehicle and on the road, or better yet, into a "camp" where food and water, and tents will be set-up and that beats staggering down the highway any way you slice it!

The first thing the military is going to do is establish cordons and blockades. You'll be required to register, each and all, and if you even BLINK suspicious you'll be pulled out and searched! Maybe at some point there will be a sea change in the minds of government forces, but initially, expect them to tow the line and do exactly as told.

There won't be any "hunting" on the side of any roads. That's going to bring a swift response. There won't BE any carry of rifles past the first checkpoint. There won't be any carry of handguns that can be readily discovered.

The goal of government once you come out of your house and are forced to "refugee" is to render you powerless against the State.

And speaking of bugging out...to where exactly? HOW exactly? Maybe those fortunate enough to have family have options, but for most...do you really THINK for an instant all those people living up in the hills are going to sit back and let you just come a tromping on up and make yourself at home? THEY'LL call the government to report your coming!

Once the SHTF there won't be any giant pickemup trucks blasting up the highway....that's going to be shut down instantly! You will NOT be allowed to move thousands of pounds of resources just because you decide to do so.

The best answer is to start now thinking about how to lay-in an adequate supply of food and WATER, and to have strategies to composting waste to reduce as much as possible the potential for a Cholera outbreak.

Turning off and on water and sewerage will be something the government starts early on to quickly identify all those "rugged individualists" and put them in their place quickly.

So with all that said the very best weapons you can have or plan to carry are the smallest, lightest, most unlikely to be discovered. You should have NO first-tier weapons in your home that don't have suppressors because your first goal is to NOT DRAW ATTENTION to yourself.

The problem of course is they show up with magnetometers to search - even below ground level outside.

There is only one real response and that is to have already made up your mind how this is going to go BEFORE the troop deployments begin. The answer does NOT lie in social media.

As much as I'd love to choose a revolver, practicality demands a Glock. The Glock 26 can be easily concealed with the 10 round mag, or I can slap in a 33, 19, 17, or 15 round mag for party time. I have owned Glocks since 1990. For over 30 years, I have never had a single issue that has shaken my confidence in their reliability. In a serious situation, you don't get style points. I

As several others here have said, a Glock 19 would be my first choice. In my case, that’s a Gen 4 with eight mags, including two 17 rounders fitted with grip extensions. If I could stretch to a couple more, I’d find room for my Beretta 92 and Shield Plus.
