What year is my 9mm model 39-2?

Hi im looking to find the year and ballpark value of my 39-2 my grandpa gave me serial# is a145176. Thanks

serial numbers

I have noticed some interesting serial numbers in this post and I am impressed how knowledgeable most of you are! Can anyone tell me the significance of "TAC" as a prefix serial #?

I just picked up a nice blued 39-2 for $390 plus tax.

Serial number is A199XXX.

What year would this have been built. In doing a little research maybe 1973 or 1974?

Hopefully an expert could tell me.

As a side note, I got the pistol because I live in CT and we can only carry 10+1 or lower. So I figured I would get a single column 9mm. This feels great in my hand. I am so glad I got it. I just can't wait to get it to the range and try it out.

Bumping to try and get a response. Thank You!

FYI, A203xxx shipped in July of 1973. This is a relative comparison since S&W didn't necessarily ship in numerical order. The 39-2 is still considered one of the most ergonomically friendly shapes a pistol has ever taken. I take mine to the range regularly and enjoy shooting it every time. I like the plain, wide, dark blue sights. Easy on old eyes.
Enjoy yours,

Jerry

Hi, if I should have made a new thread I apologize, but I would like help dating my Model 915, serial # TZJ28xx, thanks very much!

1973-1974 Is as close as I can come.
If I had to guess.. and it would be a guess/estimate I would say late 1973. A factory letter will give you an exact date.

I called S&W today and spoke with Roy Jinks, I told him the serial number, and he was like, it's either from 1970 or 1971, then he hung up. It doesn't seem he is right though, as other members serial numbers don't jive with what he said.

Does anyone know if S&W still works on or rebuilds model 39's? If not, can anyone recommend a good S&W gunsmith? Thanks!!!! I want mine to be gone over before I shoot it. Think I want to get it refinished in nickel too!

Just joined the forum. I was willed a Nickel 39-2 s/n A306xxx, I know it was mfg and shipped in 1977 as my late father was the original owner. I am wondering the value, it is in great shape and still fires flawlessly. Not interested in selling just for want the info for me.

Greetings all! I am guessing that since a S/N of A122xxx is from around 1970, a S/N of A123xxx would be around the same time frame (1970-1972)?

Hi Folks, I don't know the birthdate of my SW 39-2 but I love it! Anyway, I am not the first owner of this pistol. It is nickel and absolutely beautiful. I noticed in many pics I have seen on these postings, it looks like the metal Smith and Wesson design on the grips is goldish on the SW. Is that true or am I seeing things? Oh, my gun is Serial Number A417217 if anyone knows the Manufacture Date of my unit. Thanks. Ted

I think I will jump on this thread bandwagon to ask my questions! I have a beautiful nickel finished 39-2 and I only have 1 magazine...I see expensive S&W ones on eBay...Does a 39 S&W magazine fit this gun? Is there a better place to find one. I am limited due to handicap regard wainting in a gun show line! I would rather keep with S&W. Thanks folks!

Just picked up a NIB Model 39-2, serial number A 5275XX. Has rubber grips but feels heavy. Is this a steel frame version? Will be a great back up gun or maybe off duty. Any help appreciated.
