What's been the most reliable S&W auto-in your experience?

The 4566 was my duty gun for over 10 years. Only retired it because I was forced to do so, had to carry the department-issued Glock 21. Never had a single failure of any type with the 4566.

the first "wonder" nine...

I have a model 59 that I have owned for close to 30 years-and shot extensively-and it will not only shoot any ammo-including lead reloads-but does so with stellar accuracy, without a hicup. Flapjack

Hard to say "most reliable" when all of mine are reliable. But I have a 915 that works like the proverbial Singer sewing machine. I have over 54K rounds through it at last count, and it has never had a malfunction of any kind. I've loaded magazines where each round was a different brand or bullet configuration and it will feed and fire like it was all match grade ammo. Plus it's almost boringly accurate. It will put rounds exactly where it's supposed to every time as long as I do my part.

Actually, I have never owned one that wasn't, but I guess I would always vote for the Model 10. It ain't fancy, but it will never let you down.

Ophs, just saw the "automatic" part. Haven't shot it a lot but with my lack of experience with S&W autos, I guess I would have to vote for the 39-2.

Not too sound like a smartalec but...ALL OF THEM!! From an ancient 39-2, to my present 5946 they just eat, and eat, and EAT! Just clean 'em and lube 'me from time to time, feed 'em good ammo and they go BOOM! Dale

I guess mine would be in this order:

Custom Colt Governemnt 1911
Sig P228
Sig P226
Sig P220
S&W Model 41
Ruger Mark II

All of these never had a hick up since day 1.

I've had a 5906 since about 1992 that's been to several instructors schools, shooting schools and more matches than I care to remember. Never an issue.

M&P9 since 2006, some oversize reloads (mea culpa!) caused some issues. No problems since I broke down and bought a case gauge. Never an issue with factory stuff.

EDC since '94. 0 malfunctions in about 8-10K rounds. Joe

I own the following: 39-2, 3913, 3914, 5904, 4566. I've never experienced ANY type of malfunction with ANY of these pistols. Need I say more?

In a few words, my S&W 1911 (SKU 170261) has had thousands of rounds put through it and never had a flaw yet with any type ammo. I shoot a minimum of 100 rounds per week through it and have for well over 2 yrs. Never a FTF, jamb or feeding issue.

That is not to say I did not have a problem otherwise but not with the shooting or performance.

My 4566 has been 100% reliable. Even with the cheap red box Federal from WalMart and the cheap ProMag magazines that are hit and miss, I have never had a failure with this gun. And on top of being dead nuts reliable, it is way more accurate than I am.

My 3914 has never had a hiccup. The few FTFs I've had with my 5946 were from dropping mags in the dirt at the range and not fully cleaning them off before reloading. I now keep a rag on me and wipe them down fully between cycles. Dirty magazines are no one's friend.
