Gentlemen:

Elmer Keith certainly needs no introduction to S&W fans. He was the dean of old time gun writers and, although short of stature, was larger than life to a couple of generations of American shooters.

I recognized him immediately when I saw this image. Yesterday, a friend gave me a very large stack (18 inches worth) of old gun magazines from the late 1950s to the early '70s. Halfway through the pile I saw this February 1958 issue of "GUNS". I have always enjoyed reading the old issues of American Rifleman, GUNS, Shooting Times, Outdoor Life, etc. Tons of good information and images can still be found in their pages.

So, what is this beautiful floral carved holster that Elmer has on his left hip? The revolver appears to be Elmer's pre-Model 29 .44 Magnum which was a gift from Carl Hellstrom of S&W.

Here is a pic I found of Keith's pre-Model 29 .44 Magnum. With that distinctive shield on the left side of the ivory stock indicating the gift from Hellstrom, it is readily identifiable. (Photo credit to Guns & Ammo mag.)

The revolver was engraved by George Madis. I don't know the serial number of it or where it is now, but I understand that the .44 Magnum was one of Elmer's guns sold in the Julia Auction in 2015. A little bit of quick searching did not show this same holster in that auction, although I might have overlooked it.

I also did a quick search through my copy of "Holstory", the now-essential reference on vintage American gunleather. Although Keith is given considerable space in the book, I did not see this particular Keith holster pictured therein.

So, can anyone identify the maker and model of the very attractive holster which Elmer Keith is wearing in this now 60-year old image? With that darkened background in the carving, I am thinking it's a Myres but am fully prepared to be educated otherwise by Turnerriver, Red or any of our other gun leather experts here.

And a Merry Christmas to all.

That gun has been shown with a right hand holster that I think was made by Ed Bohlin, I can only guess at the maker of the holster you show. It’s lines are unusual- Lawrence’s model 34 is a candidate as is Myres as you mention. I’m thinking with luck someone will know about that holster and maybe even own it.
Did you set out to stump me ? You’re doing a good job...

Did he always wear his M29 on his left side, or was that just for the picture?

When I saw that picture my first thought was "I didn't know
Elmer was left handed."

That extra long retention strap leads me to believe it may be an early version of the Lawrence #120
which was named for Keith.

Elmer had a little showman in him - well, more than a little! :D It wouldn’t surprise me if he wore the gun in a LH holster specifically for that picture so readers could see the shield. :)

I can’t help with the holster maker in this case but do recall him mentioning S. D. “Tio Sam” Meyers, as I believe he often referred to him. Wonder if it might be one of his?

Now that’s weird, even for Elmer.
I sneaked a peek at the Holster Chapter of Sixguns.
OMG! So much floral stuff I thought I was at a funeral.
I could not find the exact pattern of the pictured holster.
Some Myres and some Lawrence holsters come close.
The Lawrence 34 probably comes the closest.
But I can’t find it with the pictured pattern.
Here is a enlarged pic of that LH N Frame holster.
I would love to have it!
I’m Lefthanded!

Thanks for the conundrum, Charlie, I was influenced by Elmer's writings when I was a kid, and this image fits right in with my memories. I too believe he is wearing another sixgun on his right hand side. Beautiful holster and sixgun!!

Best Regards, Les

Something else may have factored into that picture. As a child Elmer got caught in a fire and the other side of his face showed some scarring. He may have just wanted to look “good” for the picture

If you look very very close I think you can see the very bottom tip of the other holster, either that or I may be seeing things, Notice the matching belt as well...………………………………………….M*

One has to wonder what Elmer would be saying about the 500 S&W if he was writing articles today. Fantastic person. I acquired his sixgun book last year and still enjoy rereading certain parts of his book at times. Nice cover photo on the old magazine
