What's so "fancy" about Godiva Chocolates? that is worth the price?

I like that chocolate in those $2 bars that kids sell to raise funds for this and that.

Seriously, how can you go wrong with a candy bar that bills itself as "World's Finest". I mean, it says so right there on the wrapper, so it must be true.

They look a little different now, but I remember the ones with the truncated pyramids stick that didn't last any longer than two or three classes.

Kinda like those 10 lb boxes of fresh blueberries I used to buy at work that by the time I got home there were about a dozen rolling around in the bottom of the box.

Why should I buy expensive anything when heaven can be had for a few bucks???

I've smoked a good many hand rolled cigars in the 5 to 10 buck range and a few much more expensive than that. But honestly I'm extrememely satisfied with a Dutch Master, White Owl or King Edward.

Maxwell House and Folgers are good, too. I don't want any coffee that a monkey has pooped out at 20 a cup, either. Ok, lemur. Monkey, primate....who cares???

Carl, that was a very nice secret Santa gift to give. Nearly everyone likes chocolate. Godiva chocolate is good. I have friends that swear it is the best. Everyone has different tastes. For me, I like See's better but I think part of that is the nostalgia of it being a special treat growing up where it in the house 2x/year (Christmas and Valentine's day). My husband is the true chocoholic. He eats 3 pieces every morning of 72% dark chocolate from Belgium (Trader Joes 1 lb bar $5). It's a good one for everyday value and good for recipes.

Two chocolate bars I have had in the past couple years that were amazingly good were:

1. Ghirardelli Intense Dark Cabernet Matinee (Dark chocolate with blackberry and grape).

2. Dagoba 74% xocolatl (dark chocolate with chilis and cacao nibs) This one is pricey but seriously gooooooood! This is a rich one so 1-2 squares is more than enough so the bar lasts. They also make the best hot chocolate I've ever had. They sell it at our local Walmart, but they don't carry this bar.

If you want to try Godiva, try it. You can always get a couple pieces or a small sampler box. Then you can say you've had it.
You only live once!

Having grown up in the UK my "norm" was Cadbury's or Terry's for Chocolate. Hershey's as mentioned above, is not "chocolate but sugar and perhaps 10% cocoa butter. Having traveled quite a bit on Uncle Sam, though as a GS not military, Swiss followed by German followed by Brazil and/or Ecuador would be my choices, with Hershey's not even listed. Dave_n

You had me right up to the Dutch Master and White Owl cigars, as I'd sooner smoke a rolled up grease rag, then those (I've found a few different "throw aways" that can be found on the cheap, yet smoke great).

As to coffee, I'm all for a cup or two (or ten) of Maxwell House (or Chock full o' Nuts!), but Folgers, I draw the line right there!

Then buy another of the posted brands like Lindt and try it.
You fav and price point might be different than other choc eaters.
I like all chocolate.
I even like survival kit tropical chocolate.
It's sort of like semi - sweet baking chocolate, which I also like.

I do not think it is worth the price, but that is my taste. Kinda like Wine, ice cream, Scotch whatever some folks like different things.

My favorite is Dove Dark Chocolate. For the price it is the best tasting and more "mouth feel" than any other.

Way better than Hershey or Nestle.

Dove is a fave of mine as well as a "fan favorite" at work. Mainly, I only get the dark chocolate kinds.

Ive not tried it yet but, the recipient at work said she'd save me a couple pieces to try. trouble is-I never know when she's working unless we bump into each other.

I like good chocolate that is worth the asking price.

I buy the Lindt 70% Cocoa bars.

The ones that are higher than 70% Cocoa are too bitter for my taste.

Ive not tried those but have been thinking on it for a long time. I see that Toblerone is readily available-tried it but don't really think its cracked up to be what its thought to be.

Price differences are ridiculous. Quality German chocoloate bars, like Ritter, or Swiss, like Lindt, that I regularly find in Germany for 69 or 99 cents on sale, will set you back $2.50 or 2.99 here. And Lindt actually produces here now, although they actually manage to maintain Swiss quality.

Don't get me wrong, I love this country, but chocolate is one of the few things where no American brand will ever come close to German-Swiss-Belgian stuff.

Ive seen but not tried Ritter-----yet. Ive had the German Milcha-the Norwegian version as well-they are fairly good-reminds me of Hersheys. What's the one in the 4th photo? looks great.

I'm hoping to when I see Terri at work. The cheapest Godiva package I see is one with 3 santa-like figures In it for $8 bucks. All three together MIGHT equal one of those mini reeses peanutbutter cups.

There's real chocolate and not. I don't know what Godiva uses but Hershey's is not real chocolate. It's milk chocolate which has a ton of sugar added and deluded with milk. Real chocolate is bitter and good.

I buy these. They are about 1.5lbs of 90% chocolate where as Hershey's is about 10% chocolate

I'm game. Where can you get these at?

I have a hunch that American demand for chocolate way outstripped the supply of actual chocolate, so they've come up with some kind of nasty substitute that looks like the real thing, but to those of us who've tasted real chocolate, the Hershey's product is pure garbage. I've never liked Neslte chocolate.

I don't care for Nestle either-reminds me of eating wax.

Fancy chocolate is too creamy for me. I like eating milano double dark chocolate cookies with plain M&Ms in the same bite.

I had the Wife Buy me a box of these for Christmas.

I'm hoping Terri can save at least one piece for me to try. They have a smaller package of them containing 3 tiny figures-costs $8 bucks. They amount to maybe 1 7 1/2 mini reeses peanut butter cups.

I tried a Ghiradelli square recently-thought it was good and will get more. Ive not seen the other for sale here. WM and HEBs has almost no imagination when it comes to the finer things in life. Their only exception-are small boxes of Merci chocolates.

I like the semi-sweet baking chocolates too. I get just the dark chocolate kinds. I forget the brand but comes in either a blue or red package.

For starters I am not addicted to chocolate. I can spend many months without ever touching it, and there is always chocolate at home (there is an addiction case at home, but it's not me ).

but, I never cared for milk chocolate. Only black. And it has to have full hazelnuts in it. In this, the resident chocolate addict agrees with me.

I been buying Bridgewater chocolate good stuff but very expensive. I just ordered liquor filled chocolate online from Finland and Russia. I ordered milk chocolate from Sweden. Great stuff.

Folger's is marginal. Taster's Choice is good instant coffee. I haven't tasted Maxwell House in decades, but it used to be good.
I haven't seen it at the grocer in years. May be a distribution thing.

I have to agree with Tom S., as far as chocolate and brewed coffee it's hard for me to find something truly distasteful but still not a fan of chocolate in my coffee or coffee ice cream.
Cigars, on the other hand I do not get. I'm glad folks can find ways to enjoy the ritual of the smoke but to me it's as if I'm downwind from a landfill fire.

Would not call it good chocolate .. its at the bottom just above Hersey .. Good chocolates from Europe will make you fall in love with them ..

No wax in them there .. They will actually melt in your mouth .. I brought back several boxes from the Danish commissary where I was stationed years ago ..

While I admit to not being exposed to the various foreign brands listed here, I'll say that Hershey's milk chocolate Symphony bar is very tasty to my blue collar, mill-hunk taste buds.
