What's the 10mm magazine history?

I was checking my magazines for differences and found I've got 5 types. Can someone give me the history and reasons for the differences?

Here's the list:

Notes:
(1) Items noted appear from top to bottom, as the magazine would be in the pistol,
with the pistol pointed away from the shooter.
(2) The dimples are probably there to hold the base of the top round during recoil.
(3) Short magazine strings are fully hidden under the follower's top. Long magazine
strings fill the length of the follower and are visible under the follower's top.
(4) All magazine bodies have "10 MM" and the S&W logo at the bottom on both sides.
(5) Stampings deeper that those above.
