What's the difference between a hand me down and a heirloom ?

Shirt

To take the question seriously ... ;)

I've always understood the term "heirloom" to have an emotional component of family tradition or unique connection to previous and now dead owners/ancestors. It should be something particular to them, not just stuff they owned. It's also not tied to monetary value.

And on a side note, hand-me-downs don't have to come from dead people. Although when I was a kid we were so frugal, not to say poor, that I distinctly remember wearing my departed grandpa's flannel shirts. Definitely NOT heirlooms.
I for one , will never ask where did you dig up that shirt!

A hand me down is something that a family member gives you because it has no use or value to them any longer.

An heirloom is what the state considers those above items to be if the family member dies before giving them to you and expects you to pay tax!

My brother gave me his old Rolex, when he bought a new one. I deal blackjack and when a guest says something about my watch, I reply with it was a hand me down from my brother. Over the years I've had 3 watch collectors at my table, and they all made me an offer. Nope I will never sell it, too much sentimental value. I guess they only made this model for less than a year. It's around 25 years old, he gave it too me on my 20th Bday....

Hand me downs were the clothes that my older brother wore until he out grew them, and were very possibly handed down to him by a cousin or uncle. I wore them until they were threadbare or I out grew them. I was a little kid, so I probably wore them until they were no longer even good for rags. I still wear old, threadbare shirts and pants around the house because they are comfortable. I don't wear them when company is expected or when we go out.

A heirloom is my Dad's old vise that my Mother gave me after he passed away. It is mounted to my reloading table and I think of my Dad when I use it. He died at the young age of 49, way back in 1953. I was almost 10 years old, I am now almost 77 now, (September), and I still miss him.

Don't take your parents for granted, enjoy every minute you can with them.

Have a blessed day,

Leon
