What’s the Saddest Song You Ever Heard?

Paper Rosie, Gene Watson.

Hello Country Bumpkin, Cal Smith. Is a great song with a sad ending.

Christmas shoes,. "There's not much time, I want her (momma) to look beautiful if she meets Jesus tonight."

Freebird, always makes me cry.

In the ghetto, Elvis

What about the theme song from The Alamo ?
I guess it´s The Green Leaves of Summer and if I recall correctly composed by Victor Young.
Regards, Ray

I already mentioned it and it's by: Dimitri Tiomkin.

Ray Peterson - Tell Laura I Love Her

Gotta have some age on ya to know this one.....

Laura and Tommy were lovers
He wanted to give her everything
Flowers, presents and most of all, a wedding ring
He saw a sign for a stock car race
A thousand dollar prize it read
He couldn't get Laura on the phone
So to her mother Tommy said
Tell Laura I love her, tell Laura I need her
Tell Laura I may be late
I've something to do, that cannot wait
He drove his car to the racing grounds
He was the youngest driver there
The crowed roared as they started the race
'Round the track they drove at a deadly pace
No one knows what happened that day
How his car overturned in flames
But as they pulled him from the twisted wreck
With his dying breath, they heard him say
Tell Laura I love her, tell Laura I need her
Tell Laura not to cry
My love for her will never die
And in the chapel where Laura prays
For Tommy who passed away
It was just for Laura he lived and died
Alone in the chapel she can hear him cry
Tell Laura I love her, tell Laura I need her
Tell Laura not to cry
My love for her will never die
Tell Laura I love her

Cats in the cradle Harry Chapin
Forever Young Rod Stewart
Good Riddance Green Day
Father and Son Cat Stevens
Any song that reminds me that my parents are getting older which means
I'm at the point it seems my folks were just yesterday and my kids will be
tomorrow.

Wow, over a 160 posts and no one mentioned Commander Cody's "Seeds and Stems Again Blues":

I'm sittin alone, Saturday night, watching the Late Late Show
A bottle of wine, some cigarettes, I got no place to go
Well, I saw your other man today, he was wearing my brand new shoes
And I'm down to seeds and stems again, too

Well, I met my old friend Bob today from up in Bowling Green
He had the prettiest little gal that I'd ever seen
But I couldn't hide my tears at all 'cause she looked just like you
And I'm down to seeds and stems again, too

Now everybody tells me there's other ways to get high
They don't seem to understand, I'm too far gone to try
Now these lonely memories, they're all I can't lose
And I'm down to seeds and stems again, too

Well, my dog died just yesterday and left me all alone
The finance company dropped by today and repossessed my home
That's just a drop in the bucket compared to losing you
And I'm down to seeds and stems again, too

Got the down to seeds and stems again blues

Maggie
I wandered today to the hills Maggie
to watch the scene below
the creek and the creaking old mill Maggie
as we used to long long ago

the green grove is gone from the hills Maggie
where first the daisies sprung
the creaking old mill is still Maggie
since you and I were young

2
they say that I'm feeble with age Maggie
My step are much slower than then
my face is a well written page Maggie
and time all alone was the pen

They say we have outlived our time Maggie
as dated as the songs that we've sung
but to me you're as fair as you were Maggie
when you and I were young

I haven't heard that in years...

Matt Monro's version of "Softly, As I leave you" really gets to me. It was played at my mother's services, and there wasn't a dry eye to be seen. While in the reception line after the services, I had many comments about the song and how it was a perfect choice. Over 400 attended.

A long, long time ago it was in my piano repertoire. It is pretty, but I never thought of it for a funeral. It is really apropos.

'Honey' was a very sad song..

I cannot hear it but I break out laughing remembering the Smothers Brothers version. 14 yrs old in 68.

..but I guess I'll have to look up the Smother Bros. version.

It reminds me of a delightful young lady I worked with. Married for a short time and found a black spot on her leg. She did well, considering and even came for a visit. She was very well liked. Some months later we got the word.:(

Hey, I just remembered this one....

'My Father's Shoes' by Leon Russell

And now I think of my daddy
He wore these kind of shoes
And after all this time
I think I know him

I'd like to say I love him
But the time has passed away
What all the words I can say
What all the words I can say

there is another whose title I never learned and I never learned who sang it. It was a song that came with a package of songs for a fast food restaurant to play over and over. It was sung by some female-who had all female backups. It always gripped my heart hard-and reminded me of those special to me who I lost or who I greatly missed. I wish I could remember enough of it to post here.

The ones that always get me are "Where have you been" by Kathy Mattea, "The Little Girl" by John Michael Montgomery and "If You get there before I do" by Colin Raye. And there's a strong case to be made for "Come thou Fount of Every Blessing".

I believe this one's pretty sad.
Makes me think about how many people go through life without finding much, if any happiness in their lives. It also makes me appreciate and realise how fortunate I am.

Staind - Something to remind you

So this is it
I say goodbye
To this chapter of my ever-changing life
And there's mistakes
The path is long
And I'm sure I'll answer for them when I'm gone

So when the day comes
And the sun won't touch my face
Tell the ones who cared enough
That I finally left this place
That's been so cold

Look at my face
All the stories it will tell I can't erase
The road is long
Just one more song
A little something to remind you when I'm gone
When I'm gone

The road to hell
Along the way
Is paved with good intentions so they say
And some believe
That no good deed
Goes unpunished in the end or so it seems

So when the day comes
And the sun won't touch my face
Tell the ones who cared enough
That I've finally left this place
That's been so cold

I wouldn't call it a song, it's mostly a guitar solo, but I've heard a lot of people say that Eddie Hazel's "Maggot Brain" is the saddest thing they've heard.

Bydd Myrdd O Rhyfeddodan. The Welsh resurrection hymn. Heard it a lot in my youth as the elder members of my family passed. Not so much now as there are so few left, and my cousin, a fantastic tenor, has gone as well.

Father and Son...Guardians of the Galaxy...

Perfect ending to a film...Peter understands who was his real daddy growing up who protected him and taught him to be a man...[ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJDHkjXBtcU[/ame]
And then died saving him, quite a movie ending.
